    O.k so I have the crate but I still need a sort of time out…thing. So I was thinking of getting a baby gate (as per your very informant forum) but I don't have an assigned area. We were thinking of various places where we would put it so need a gate that can eaily be moved around, so an installing gate is out. Plus we'de like one that can go across the livingroom/diningroom hall..about 4-5ft wide. Any suggestions? This is really for the nipping problem especially when my daughter is home alone with him.

    When I wanted to give my dogs more space I got one of those doggie play pens. It gives them some space but keeps them crated and they can easily be together. They are pretty light so you can move them around. But I will warn you, my fear was that Dash would try to climb out and knock it on him self so we put it around a beam in the basement so if he did it couldn't hurt him. He never tried though….yet.:eek:
    The one we have is about 4 ft high and maybe 6 ft long??. It is just connected panels so you can add to it to get the legnth you want across an area or you can make it a circle for a play pen, as I have. I got it at PETCO for about $100. It was well worth it.

    I guess I'll end up just getting a small pressure gate since the big ones have to be mounted, hence can't be moved around. I'll figure out what time out space I can designate for him. Some of thos gates have the criss cross shape and open bottom…hello have you never heard of BASENJI's?

    My husband thinks the baby gate for our B is silly so I don't think i can talk him into the $100 playpen plus our B is too active, it won't be able to stay in place. I can see it already collapsing.

    I grew up with birds, hamsters, cats, dog, rabbits and we had hives of honey bees. Never anything wrong with me all my life even got lucky never stepped on a bee. My kids have cats, dogs, bird and my daughter never worn pretty little dress cause she would go right under a car with her dad and get grease all over her. Dirt and my son go hand in hand. They have been healthy. Now as far as walking to school I could not do that. Been far to many kids never got to school to many out there take kids. So my kids have never been allowed to walk to school. One mile there but anything could happen. People that usually do not want animals have there little fancy house and do not want the hair or the dirt. We have a friend who has three children just got a puppy about month ago poor puppy. Puppy got over gate in wash room and well had fun while they were at work. She just about lost it aniamls are better off without being that kind of home I told her so. Sad news her husband just went to work for Science Diet and they have a animal day once a month and they told him it was important they had a animal. He lied when got job and said he did. Now there is a puppy my heart really goes out to. Rita Jean

    You need to work on calming her – I've done this with mine by making sure I ignore the outside noises, yawning and sighing when there's noises, anything to show her that as alpha dog you choose to ignore the outside distractions and she will catch on -- it does take some time though. You might have her do some sit+reward or other behavior+reward to help her calm down when she hears the noises.

    In my experience (only as a long time dog owner; and several dog personalities) dogs don't like to be awakened suddenly - it's a survival instinct. I don't think anyone/dog was at fault in your situation but I would definitely heed the advice given in earlier posts, including training your baby how to behave around the dogs as well (babies learn early about the world around them). I've found that even young children can elicite unexpected responses from my EL D – the neighbor girl (preschool) across the street likes him but has a (bad) habit of shreeking whenever he comes to her -- not only does it get on my nerves, her shreeking iritates EL D (his hair starts to rise) and I have to always talk/pet to him to calm him. Another neighbor has a grandson (with a constant grin on his face) who loves to call EL D to him and then tries to poke him in the eye or nose. Luckily so far EL D has always taken that as accidental (which it clearly is not) and has generally turned away. People have a tendency to train/change dog behavior but ignore/forget training the behavior of children.

    Lovely photos, so glad your pack is accepting of the "new puppy". I feel that if you just expect basenjis to be good, they will be!

    @Tayda_Lenny: So y'all know I have had issues with Lenny being ultra agressive at the dog park. I'm in between jobs now, so I thought it'd be a good time to bring Lenny and Tayda to the dog park when there is no one there, maybe get him used to the smells and perhaps one or two other dogs. So today was our first try. We were alone for about 5 minutes and then a britney spaniel came in. She was really submissive - I guess that was good for our situation. As she was getting in through the gate I was holding Lenny and Tayda, then I let Tayda go, and then Lenny after that. He started to chase and nip at the britney for a few minutes, and then he let up. From that point he didn't really pay a lot of attention to her. She went into the water to escape and wouldn't come out. She came out a few times, and he would chase her, but it was more of a playing chase, rather than a "i'm gonna kill that dog chase" So it seems like Lenny had this initial urge to establish his dominance, and then once he accomplished that, he didn't care much. Any hints on how to get him to ease up at the beginning? Overall I think it was promising. The britney left cause the owner couldnt get her to come out of the water, and then we were alone again for another 20 minutes or so and then I left with them as well. Tayda, as usual, played a little, and then just sunbathed. :) I totally understand where you are coming from. Dash is the same way. I was watching Ceasar one day and he mentioned that dog parks are a lot of high energy which can rile your dog up. I have noticed that with Dash too. As soon as we get to the park he races in 90 miles/hr to the first meanest, biggest dog he can find and bites at him. To combat that we actually have cut back a lot at the park and are just walking him more. But when we do go we try to use the small dog section to wear him out a little. For some reason the small dogs don't seem to be dominant towards him. Once he is a little tired and used to the park we switch over to the large dog section. He is not nearly as bad.

    WELL i went to the ob today and they thought i might have twins!! but the U/S showed only one GORGIOUS healthy baby!!! hehe
