Flea treatment

  • How diligent are you all with flea treatment for your basenjis?

All 3 of my cats are due for their shots this week.
They are all senior cats and have always seem to be a little out of it after their flea shots, at least for a day. We use the shot as opposed to the solution because they just lick the solution off.

How do your basenjis react to a flea vaccine? Or do you use the treatment applied on the back of the neck? With basenjis having such bendy heads, do they try to lick off the solution?

  • I use Frontline. They do not try to lick off. I usually apply at bed time so it mostly absorbed by the time they wake up.

I have not heard of a flea vaccine.

  • Tillo had his last flea and tick treatment…... last summer? He never has any fleas and I found his first and only tick when we were in Sweden, a week after his treatment. I apply it between the shoulders. No licking here, I don't think he can reach it ;)
If we go on holiday I do treat the house and give Tillo his treatment too, just to be sure :) I use Frontline for the house and Practic for Tillo.

  • I've only used Frontline once - because of a feral cat in the yard last year. Otherwise, I don't use flea treatment as we don't have a problem. I use natural bug wipes (for mosquitoes, black flies, ticks, deer flies, etc) that are available at Planet Dog. I think they contain citronella, lavendar and neem oil. If my dogs were traveling to a place where there was a flea problem, I would probably give each of mine a dose of Frontline.

My vet says that they see lots of dogs still contract Lyme's (and other tick borne diseases) while using Frontline, so the best option is a visual check after walking in tall grass or woods. Easy to see on my r&w - not as easy on brindle or b&w, so I try to also use a flea comb.

  • I used Frontline a few times last year, but I rarely take Kananga to wooded areas and fleas are not a problem around here, so I'm not using it this year.

No problems with ticks so far… :D

  • I rarely have flea problems with my Basenjis -they have garlic regularly which I think may be the reason. They are around all sorts of wild animals so must be in contact with fleas at some point.

I would never take a chance with heart worm... I use NuHeart that is just for heart worm... small pill once a month... we do not have issues with heart worm in NoCal but I do not take a chance. I use it year round. In the area that there is frost/frozen for the winter you can use it just in the spring/summer/fall months. For fleas/ticks I use frontline but only when I see fleas... again in NoCal not too much of an issue.. I need to use it maybe about twice a year and only when need or if I am traveling with the pups.

To my knowledge, dogs don't get Posion Ivy….. As far as Fleas.... while we don't have a big problem here in No. California... I do need to use flea protection.. at times.... To be on meds for heartworm is responsible... and I would never take a chance... Liver problems with Basenji is not uncommon... that to me is the biggest plus for blood work up at least once a year... especially with our old Basenjis... some as with the Kidney's starting to shut down... my 15 1/2 yr old has been Kidney failure (nothing to do with Fanconi, but just old age) for almost the last year.... we have kept her going to SUBQ fluids since we found this out... and while I would do no more then this, since she accepts the fluids well (we at this time give fluids 2 to 3x's a week...) we take each day as a bonus day until the time she is ready to cross the bridge.... As far as flea meds.... if they don't have fleas... I would not worry about it.... of couse different then meds for heartworm... since that is a mosquitos born problem...

@nala121498: I'm glad to know that he's progressing nicely and you are finding ways to adjust to it. Still keeping you guys in my thoughts and prayers for a speedy recovery! Bless you Nala, Today has been a hard day for the whole family. Mom is having difficulty with her arthritis and the pain is very strong. I am ready with the pain meds as needed. Beeji must have gotten up full of the devil as he has been into waaaaaaaaay too many things today. We started out with the food battle. I put the mixed dry and wet into the bowl. He watched me as If he was the prince and had to say "No that doesn't suite me, take it away. Well after 20 minutes, I took up the food snacks. Anything he could reach such as rawhides etc were put away. We get dressed, leashed and ledding and are finally ready to go. We walked a double amount this morning and by the time I got him back t the house, I was exhausted but he was still pretty fiesty. We decided to head to the back yard where I can toss his floppy disk and he can chase it, growl at it, shake it in that death toss and then he flips it up and runs after it again. When we went in for lunch. He tried the begging route but Mom and I had talkd aobut how to reach him first and find a job fo him and
