Happy Birthday Podengos

  • Happy to help you out in England. Yes you do have quite a supply of Pequenos there but from what I can see in show photos - getting a little too big. I understand that happens because in the UK you don't measure any breed - but it would be too bad if they got bigger than their purpose.

Let me know when you want to start on the bigs- LOL

  • re: Basenji Pharoh mix - The primitive dogs of the Mediteranian region have many similarities. I would guess that there are common ancestors for Pharoh, Caanan Dog, Ibizan, Podengo, etc etc. Given the transport patterns of the Phonecians - I'm sure there are common ancestors.

The stud book we have is only documented to 1928 although we know they were hunting long before - the smaller size Pequeno smooth were the ratters on the Explorer ships.

They're great dogs! Thanks for that piece of information.

Thanks for the pix Petra - he has grown to be a handome boy!

Your welcome Diana, we are just so happy to have him. Yes, he is handsome for sure. Lots of interest when I bring him out of the woodwork..people just can not stop ohh-ing and ahh-ing over him and of course..he loves that.
Here are some pictures of him sitting and waiting ever so patiently for his slice of carrot cake, he even tried high fiving it..

    Waiting…

    High fiving…

    waiting some more..

    finally a taste..

ps again, the other dogs got a taste too…

  • wow one year allready! congrats!
    they are all so pretty!

  • Ah, how I wish I was 15 years younger - I'd love one!! In the meantime I can only drool (figuratively) over the pictures of yours!!

Yes some of the Pequenos here are rather on the big side but without measuring in the ring it can only be a guess. Personally when I judge (Basenjis only) I know exactly where on my leg is the maximium height, I think I would do the same if I did judge any breeds that had more than one size.

I would love to see a new rule that judges should have the matrix system tattoed on their legs hahahaha :D

  • What a good idea!!!! Perhaps in their brains might be better!!!!!!

  • Mozes looks stunning! What a handsome boy! A belated happy Birthday to him and his brothers and sisters :)

Thank you Janneke..we think he is stunning too.

Podengo temperament - first as I said before they have a softer temperament than basenjis - harsh corrections result in a dog that will melt into the ground. The Medio size (keeping in mind I do not live with this size) needs to be kept busy - they are active and appear to do well when there is some pretty physical exercise and brain activity for them. Lure coursing, agility, even rally can keep them happy and focused. A couple of foks are going to try them at fly ball. All sizes like to hunt and must always be behind a fence or on a leash. I find that the Grande (BIGS) are a bit more laid back. They love to run, they will catch bunnies and birds on the fly and in Portugal they run down boar and stag. Their preference appears to be investigating their enviroment for any changes and sleeping on the couch. If you think of primitive hounds of the Mediteranian Basin - you get what a Podengo looks like and how they are. Similar to Ibizan, Pharoh Hound, Cirneci, basenjis etc. The little size - pequeno is a breed apart - it is smaller 8-12 inches and is not a bred down big it is longer than tall and is a rabbit hunter in thick brush. I finally saw Base and Indi!!! Emm's so jealous. =) I was walking with Kairoe on the last stretch of it and then a guy yelled out from the parking lot, "Is that Kairoe?" I'm like.. "Yeah?" He goes back in the car and then two basenjis came out! I couldn't believe it! Base is huge! And they growled at each other. Indi was cute and calm.
