New pups and clean teeth

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • Just a reminder to everybody with new pups to start getting them used to their teeth being brushed.

  • Dan you should see Sonny & I wrestle before bed to get his teeth brushed  He goes and lays on his back with his legs up in the air because he knows its hard to pick him up that way!! :p But his teeth look good :):):):)

LOL, I can see it!:D I've got Buddy so I just swish the brush in the cup of water as I walk to the couch, which I call the dental chair and he runs over with no battles.

  • Can I ask if basenjis are prone to more dental problems than other dogs? How many of you are brushing your dogs' teeth?

IMO, no more then other dogs… I brush my teeth..ggg.... I brush theirs (would be nice if I could teach them to use the tooth brush themselves...).... and you will find with some different lines (and I am sure this is true for all breeds) some may have more dental problems then others.... Of course usually toy breeds have teeth problems, more than bigger dogs....

  • You can also use raw meaty bones to help keep their teeth clean :)

  • I have just purchased a microfibre toothcleaner for Malaika.
It looks like a tiny sock that you slip onto your finger and clean the dogs teeth with.
The info says that it contains 12,000 more fibres than a conventional toothbrush and each fibre contains antibacterial silver ions which gently removes bacteria and plaque.
Only used it twice so far and she's still getting used to it.
Am also considering getting a jar of paque off to put onto food, need to research it first.

  • I do a few things to maintain Kananga's teeth. I apply Petzlife Gel a few evenings a week right before bedtime. I'll usually try and brush his teeth a couple times per week, mostly on the weekends. But I also give him a flat rawhide to chew on throughout the month which has really helped break down the tartar on his back teeth (which are usually the tougher ones to brush).

So with all of those methods combined, it really keeps his teeth pearly white. My dentist had recommended the flat rawhide one. She said that's one of the best ways they can keep their back teeth clean.

  • I gave up brushing a long time ago. Gizmo would have nothing to do with it.

His teeth did have a bit of yellow so I started giving him ProDen PlaqueOff and his teeth are a stunning white, and his breath is fresh.

Sounds like a sales pitch I know, but I am VERY pleased with the results.

  • Thanks for sharing! I found a retailer on the website here in the US. I am eager to try it for my critters and maybe for us humans too!

  • You're welcome. Don't let the price scare you, you use very little. I have had the one "package" for a long time now…must be a few months, and not at half way yet.

I have found using it on kibble/dry food is a must. The thing is the dog has to chew it. Wet/raw food usually is gulped down. So Gizmo gets dry food for breakfast (with PlaqueOff in it), and raw for dinner.

    Let us know the results.

  • Plaque off sounds good and i noticed too that you can get a human version.
It has quite a high Iodine content so mustn't be used on animals with hyperthyroidism.
That rules one of my cats out but i am certainly considering investing in some.

  • Hm, never noticed the human version. Hope I can get it here….which I kinda expect since it's "harvested from the seas of Norway"....lol

If it helps me as much as Gizmo I will be in shock and joy!

What I don't understand is it's in tablet form....how can it help teeth if you swallow it whole? Says it works through your blood stream....eh...okay...

Looks like I might have unwittingly given clean teeth for the dogs and humans here....haha!

@3basenjimom Agree, a vet visit. I have never seen a post on grinding teeth before so it’s very unusual.

Well they actually suggest routine checks at least yearly, cleaning if needed. When I fed raw, my dogs, never a one, ever needed their teeth cleaned. And the vet felt Cara's were fine last year, but who knows in Feb.. she may need them cleaned (she'll be 3). If you make brushing a routine, you may not have to have it done. But because of Arwen's autoimmune disorder, hers have to be cleaned every 3 mos as she reacts to plaque even tho there is almost no tartar on them at cleaning time. :( So I had to go look at the stats and info. The only ones I find are like this, examine teeth, clean if necessary. But if 80 percent have issues by 3, then they probably need scaling before unless you are brushing regularly. http://now.tufts.edu/articles/dental-disease-cats-dogs ::::: Equal Opportunity Bacteria Some 80 percent of dogs and 70 percent of cats show signs of oral disease by age three, according to the American Veterinary Dental Society. However, problems can start at a much younger age. “I have taken puppy or kitten teeth out of animals that are six or seven months of age, and there is already tartar buildup,” notes Rosenblad, who teaches veterinary dentistry at Tufts and is president of the Veterinary Alumni Association.::::::

@jinxed_1980: My lovely Beau has developed a naughty habit… I came home from a festival and apparently he destroyed my blinds trying to follow me, then he opened a sentry bag that was on the dinner table and pulled out a brand new loaf of bread and he and our gorden setter, Walker, ate the whole loaf. Also when I leave him he leaves bowels in my daughters bedroom floor. How can we only have had the little guy about 2 weeks now and he already has seperation anxiety? Is it because I'm a stay at home mom and dont get out much? He watches me like a hawk and has to be where I am. If my fiance' is home he is a good boy but he paces and will just sit in the window waiting for me to return. I think he might be scaired of the dark too. Can dogs be scaired of the dark? It is not at all uncommon for rescued/adopted dogs to develop separation anxiety. When I adopted Ruby (as a 2yo retired show dog - never been an only dog), she bonded so strongly within a week that she wouldn't let me take a shower with the curtain closed…had to always see me and would follow me wherever I would go. She had to be crated for her own safety whenever I would leave the house...she would be frantic if she actually saw me walk out the door...once I was gone about 15 minutes, she could be let out of her crate, but she would still search for me for a while or if she heard any noise at all. Luckily, she was crate trained...but I also made her crate a super happy place, special treats (marrow bones, liver, kongs, etc.) so that she wouldn't watch me leave. One thing we also did was have my brother feed her and walk her...so that she would develop a stronger bond with him and less dependence on me. Ultimately though, her real end to her separation anxiety came when we added Brando (another retired show dog - 1 mo. difference in age). So you can do what I've been doing...add a basenji a year (I'm up to 3) :D:D:D...that should do it. Oh, right, you have other dogs already! :D:D Oh, and regarding being scared of the dark...yes, Ruby was afraid of the dark at first...wouldn't go pee or poop at night...would hold it until daylight. We put lanterns outdoors at the edge of the dog pen so that she could see what was on the perimeter of the property, pointed the outdoor flood lights into the dog pen...and would also walk her in the dark. Eventually, she was fine without the added light.

@Benkura: Puppy teeth are lovely but it is a relief when all the little 'needles' go. :) Ain't that the truth! :D:D

Well that's a lot more comforting. It figures something like this ends up being blown up….typical media crap. My big question when I first read the article was how someone had 600 puppies to lose in one night in the first place...
