    I am looking for a play day. My B is fairly well behaved "tolerant" of other dogs provided they are similar size and not overly excitable. He will run and chase with other dogs, however if they are overly persistent in sniffing he protects his personal space.

    Have you checked with any of the local basenji breeders to see if they have basenj classes? Did your breeder have such a class?

    Unfortunately their aren't any breeders nearby. The closest is in North Carolina, almost 8hrs away. He was a stud dog "Fanconi Free" that I rescued from Nocturnal Kennels in Roxboro, NC because they kept two of the females he sired.

    If he was a kennel dog then I would suggest you find a gentle trainer who deals with socialization of dogs, of any age, and take the classes. He might need a professional to help him become the basenji you want him to be.

    Don't get me wrong, he is good with other dogs, and great with cats. His best friend is my roommates doxi-pin. He also got along well with my grandparents German Short Hair when we visited them in CO. He is making leaps and bounds in his progress. I've actually never seen any adult dog, especially a basenji, bond so fast with a new owner. He was my best friend the moment we met. Interesting since he is standoffish around other new people.

    Love the photo.. Good that he is improving so much, but you want to to be great with all dogs and all folks yes? Nothing wrong with classes. I am taking my Wheat to one. She tends to freeze and want to flee with new dogs..and this class is making a lot of difference in how she reacts. IMO, all classes are good, rally, agility, give them a try.
    Do it for the dog. My girl loves it and I go in with the attitude its going to be fun for her.

    Love the picture of Achilles - that "one paw in the air" stance is really nice - my girl, Shaye, stands like that when she is considering whether she can get to a squirrel or some other thing before the leash runs out…....

    @jordandwilly - Thanks for clearing that up.... 9-5 is just fine, IMO.... I work and have always had to leave mine when I was at work, never an issue. That said, we were able to set up the house that access to the backyard (with 10 to 12' privacy fences) with a doggy door and a dog room in the house for them, Locks on the gates so there is NO access for anyone. Dogs sleep 90% of the day so being at work doesn't bother them... never have mine even when I had a litter in the house (And have been in the breed as owner/breeder for 35+ years). You can hire a dog walker to take them out mid day..which is a good solution. and give them a mid day meal depending on their age. I do not and never have used free feeding, period. Especially if you have more that one... you never know what/who is eating what. And you can set up camera's on line to watch them from "afar".... LOL. Keep in mind people that many of us need to work and have day jobs. The most important thing is the time you need to spend with them when you are home. Example would be, if you have young children and you work... when you get home you are going to spend your time with your human children... NO dog would be happy if left out... they need their time also because they are a family member and need as much time as a human child. Again in my opinion

    @scewbydoo One of our vet techs volunteers with the shelter where she was born. Her mom was labeled as Jack Russell. Her goofy nature makes me think Boxer mix, but who knows. The shelters down in S. TX aren't the most accurate at breed identification. I once had a shelter in San Antonio send me a picture of a brindle Basenji they wanted me to pull...it was a calico cat. Regardless of breed, Roxy is home.

    i lived in ct for years recently moved out to dc area, comin to ct for 2 weeks in august if anyone wants to meet up i have 2 basenjis but one is sick and at the vet right now had first seizures today at almost 8 yrs old i pray to god she will be ok.

    my thanks to all of you for your wonderful advice - i will take everything that you all have said into consideration before making a decision - however my wife and i have decided that our grieving over the loss of our 4 year old is not over yet so we are going to delay any decision until we can get past this point - with that in mind, and realizing how difficult these discussions have been for me, i am going to unsubscribe myself from this site until such time as we can come to better terms with our situation - again, my thanks to all of you for trying to help - Manny
