Not a Basenji, but…

  • Our friend in San Diego recently told us that there is a 5 month old New Guinea Singing Dog in desperate need of a foster home and/or permanent placement within the next couple of weeks. She didn't have all the details yet, just that he had been a pampered pet, and the owners were being transferred and could not take him with them. Not even sure where exactly he is at this point.

New Guinea Singing Dogs are basically a wild dog, there are fewer than 300 of them left, most in zoos. But they can be placed in private homes (rarely). She owns one, and he does get along fine with her Basenjis, but he is definitely different. He 'sings' a lot!!

I will try to get further details if anyone can help or knows of someone willing to possibly help with this little guy.

  • What a great looking, sturdy dog. Their singing does have some similarities to the basenji yodel. There is a sound clip at the official website http://newguinea-singing-dog-conservation.org/ I hope a good home can be found for this young dog, a home that will make a life commitment to him.

  • They look intriguing! I'm interested, although obviously I can make no promises until I know more (including how he gets along with Yoshi, my resident basenji).

  • Houston

How cool is that. I hope he finds his forever home soon.

  • Actually, not only am I interested, but I have a friend who might be as well. Keep us updated.

  • There was/is a rescue group for this breed.

Try to contact Joan Dalgleish at singingdog@telus.net.

  • Terry, I know Joan, she will want to know about this dog.

He did look like he had short legs but I thought his body was long for a Rat Terrier. I am so used to them having a docked tail and much more white on the body. I thought he may be a poorly bred Basenji. Mansfield is not too far away from the Amish area. I wonder if he barks much! Jennifer

BTW, I also use the shunning method with my basenji. He gets into everything and so I have to baby proof my house. Sometimes I leave a drink on the table and he tries to drink out of it and when I catch him with it, I let him know I am mad! I growl at him and then turn my back to him and he gets very upset. When he does anything I do want him to do, all I have to do is growl at him and he comes over to me bows his head and curls up in my lap. I guess it is an instinctual reaction to submit to his pack leader. He hates it when I ignore him in any way. He is funny, because he will sit down and look at me and whine or try to jump up on the chair with me if he thinks I am mad at him. Sent from my ADR6350 using Tapatalk

@BasenjiDiva: Wow, Vicki. Although we are down in Savannah, we also have a place up between Young Harris and Hiawassee. Maybe we could meet up sometime. Don't know how our little female hellion would do with your female though. Our male would probably be okay. Also would love to hear more about your petsitting business that you mentioned. When we are up there we would sometimes like to be able to leave for awhile without worrying about the beasties. Pat Hello - Yes, I would love to meet you when you visit your vacation home. razzcinn at aol dot com. I have two female Basenjis that are doing well together, but I, too, would be concerned about another female Basenji. Monday, I'm interviewing a retired older lady who pet sits and she will stay in the home all day and night, if needed. I need a dependable sitter, too. I often babysit for people who would like to go to dinner and get away w/o worrying about their pets. If I can't help you, I'm certain I can recommend several other dependable sitters.
