Unusual collar marking

    Would this marking be a detriment to him when being shown? He looks to have great confirmation.

    It is on his show side so will definately be noticed by the judge. Do you have a stacked pic of the puppy?

    Sorry. Don't have a stacked photo of this puppy. I'm not necessarily looking to show this puppy but am more curious as to how a judge looks at this marking.

    It really depends on what it does to the outline of the dog. It isn't technically a fault but some markings can create optical illusions that can be a detriment to the dog. That is the reason for wanting to see a stacked pic. It would show what the overall impression of the dog is with the marking.

    What did her breeder have to say about showing her and the marking? While as noted it is not a fault, it can be distracting both stacked or moving

    In the UK we've always considered this type of marking a fault in the show ring although now the standard doesn't list faults so lots of odd marking is ignored by current judges.

    I've not seen this marking before.

    This really isn't any big deal.
    Seen much more white over the shoulders and up the legs.
    If the dog is conformationally a good dog, this marking isn't going to make a difference.
    But, you would have to take into account it is black, and if you haven't shown before, then having a novice handler, black dog, and lots of white are some big strikes against the dog.
    I have shown a few dogs with more white.
    Personally, I have no issues with it… but the dog would have to be so nice conformationally, that I would even put my money into showing it.
    My bloodlines have more white than I personally like to have on a dog, but color/markings are not something I look at when grading a litter.

    Do you mind mentioning where you got your puppy and the names of the parents [sire/dam]?

    This is actually one of our puppies from this year. We aren't going to be showing this one but one of our other puppies. I was only asking the question because I had not seen any marked like this one. Oscar is going to a home as a pet. The sire is "Black Devil of the Congo CLG" and the dam is "Miss Sweetpea of the Congo CLG". The names were not chosen by us so we did not give them "of the Congo"! This puppy has a great disposition, just like his sire.

    He is special needs guidance instrument if you are coaching your beag not to pull. They are the simply dog collars I determination use on a walk for the reason that I am fearful about them slipping/contravention standard collars!.

    martingales- only thing I can use that my boy wont slip out of…that, and if you are used to a choke, this is considered a choke with safety. I am not a fan of collars on all the time due to possible strangulation (i crate my boy)....so I feel the need to put a disclaimer that a martingale does have a "loop on the collar that may catch on something

    I have used Nick Russell's collars for many years and they do not wear out. I have never had even the most wily basenji slip out of one and escape. And he will custom-make them for you if you send your ribbon to him. We are lucky that so many good products are available, everyone is bound to find something to fit your needs.

    You got to love companies that stand by their products..I have had a Lupine collar sent back too, curtesy of Otis, got it back within a week..and yes, only a few parts were left.. I will wait and order one of these for when I have a new basenji neck to wrap it around…

    Welcome to my world…my new male Basenji started marking when he walked in the house and then my Rocky boy decides he needs to mark too. I've been walking around with a spray bottle of Simple Green and rags - not to mention yelling, "Go outside to pee!" a lot. Finally, today the p***ing contest stopped. Whew. (I didn't mention I have four females and one foster female who is not spayed!) Watch the vinegar, I used it and the carpet smells like a salad when the air is humid. Yuck. I've been steaming with simple green, then rinsing well with water and 1 cup of Febreze Concentrated Fabric Freshner. I buy it in the gallon size.

    I've never taken a "puppy kindergarten" class, but all of the Obedience classes I've ever signed up for with an adult dog, give people the option to show up with the dog on a flat buckle or choker-style collar. Most trainers I know start off from scratch with everybody on a buckle collar & modify their approach for each individual dog, based on behavior patterns & problems that arise. All dogs are different & a trainer simply can't expect one approach to work for all the dogs in a group class! In any given group you're bound to have dogs like Basenjis who resist & shut down when given harsh corrections….and high-drive, hard headed working-type dogs who respond to praise BUT also benefit from a well timed collar correction. You won't get anywhere trying to train a Basenji with the same methods you'd use with a Ring sport Malinois.... Personally, if I ever decided to use a "correction" collar on any dog, it'd be a prong collar. It's just about the only tool that REALLY helped me work with my Boxer & her over-reactive issues. Properly fitted & properly used, a prong only requires light "fingertip" corrections and is actually easier on the dog's trachea than a "choke" collar. However, I wouldn't choose to use ANY "correction collar" on a Basenji....and wouldn't enroll my pups in a class that required their use. JMO
