I think that a basenji puppy and a two-year-old is a recipe for disaster for many reasons. Both require and crave lots of attention, neither one can be reasoned with, both will want to play with the same toy, both can be stubborn, and the list goes. It is far too much to expect a two-year-old to understand how to get along with any puppy, especially a basenji puppy. If your heart is set on a basenji puppy, then I think you should wait until your child is at least five or six years old.Children that age understand what you are saying about the puppy and you can explain to them why you are saying it. I agree with the person who suggested getting an older basenji or how about a puppy of another breed? t one time in my life I had a basenji and a mixed breed, and they got along beautifully.
You may love all the traits of this breed but I was suggest that you talk to owners and their experiences with the basenjis and young children. One cannot count on even the best breeders to give you the full story. Please don't get me wrong. I've had three basenjis and adored them all. I got the first one when my youngest daughter was seven. You don't have to wait that long but two years old is too young, imho. Good luck.

My fiance and I are looking for a female Basenji puppy in Mississippi. Unfortunately, I have not been able to find a breeder anywhere near me. If anyone knows of any breeders in MS, LA, or TN please let me know. We would like to have a puppy sometime closer to fall 2010.

Have you check www.basenji.org for a breeder that might be in your area. There are responsible breeders listed in the South, however you might have to expand your seach to some other states, Fla or Tx for example.
Most Basenji puppies are born in Nov/Dec so it will be difficult to find a puppy in the Fall.

I went to the BCOA breeder list….a breeder was listed under Louisiana last week....and I went back to check again today....and she's not listed there anymore. So I guess she doesn't breed Basenji's anymore. The closest breeder listed on the site is 7 hours away. So I was hoping to find someone a little closer. But if I have to travel to get my puppy....I"ll do it! : )

Just because they are not listed doesn't mean they are not breeding anymore. Some people may have chosen not to renew their listing this year especially if they haven't gotten many inquiries from that listing. Also, there are more BCOA members who breed than are listed in the online breeder referral.
You can also call the person listed on the AKC website for breeder referral and get a more complete listing and then contact the breeders she provides to see when they have their next litter planned.
