Dogs Trust open day

Basenji Talk
  • Today we went to the Dogs Trust open day in Merseyside with Malaika and Kwame.
It was very well attended and hopefuly they have raised lots of money and rehomed some Dogs.
We were realy pleased that Kwame was so sociable and he got plenty of practice being stroked and fussed by children which he needs.
Malaika won a rosette in the prettiest bitch class and has promised to share her bag of goodies with Kwame.
We were asked about the dogs almost constantly and Malaika did a few tricks for them. She also had a go at the fun agility, it was quite funny to see that she was so intent on following the piece of cheese up the ramp that she didn't appear to notice how high she was untill she got into the middle. She suddenly noticed and looked around as if to say OMG. She did well but wouldn't do the jumps, she couldn't see the point when you could just squeeze underneath.

@renaultf1: I too have started using carabiners though (the real climbing ones that have the barrel lock on the outside…need the double protection with her!)...haven't seen her figure those out yet. At least I'm putting some of my old climbing equipment to use :D:D ! That's too funny. :D Give her time and she'll have sussed it!! ps hope this works. Trying to use Quotes but never done it before!! :o

Funny how good training pays off and makes you proud of the little rascal. Family who've seen Duke in action when he was younger couldn't believe I got another one like him (Daisy). I am a so proud of Duke. Daisy is coming along OK, but we're still going thru all the training . . . it pay off big time.

When Cairo was coming into his manhood which was around the later part of his 4th month he began to try to dominate every dog (male or female) at the dog part. We were in the smaller dog pen, so there were plenty of smaller dogs for him to dominate. I recognized the behavior (not full mounted, but the arm on the back) and we didnt go back until he was fixed. Major difference. I would suggest going to a Petsmart and doing your normal commands there. It is so busy and loud there that you can practice getting his attention. Having an intact dog at the dog park is a big challenge. You dont want to take treats into a dog park in case some one else's dog is food aggressive and you have to feel confident you can pull his attention away from his interest when you want. I would think any kind of training that included socializing with other dogs would be a big help.
