2 sightings in a one day, well sort of

Basenji Talk
  • I took Chief to the vet today and who is sitting in the waiting room but a little brindle baby girl. I recall the new owner as a women who had stopped me on one of my walks with Zoe and fell in love with her. This was only a little over a month ago. Which sort of scares me. I hope this works out well. When we were finished with our check up she was gone. Hopefully I can run into her again and exchange numbers and lead her to this site. I asked her if the pup was checked for fanconi (I know when she talked to me about Zoe I mentioned this and all that goes with having a high energy dog). I think she said she got her girl from freemansburg PA.

My other was a sort of siting, because it was not seeing the basenji but the owner of a B seeing ours. Hubby and I stopped in to get a quick lunch after taking zoe and chief for a walk. He waited outside with the dogs while I was ordering. As I was leaving a woman asked if the Bs were mine. Turns out she lives in my town and is the owner of a 10yr old. I probably walk by her house all the time. Her B is not socialized she said and she has been bitten by him twice. Someone told her it was because she waited so long to neuter him. Is that possible? Our B Alphy was intact and as sweet as honey. In fact it was our female who couldnt abide other dogs and neither of them ever bit a human. Guess no puppy play date there. But it will be nice to talk to her.

No. Diggie was 10 when he was neutered and he's always been a love. Jet is still intact and while a grump with the dogs, he is very nice with people. Both are also wonderful therapy dogs.

But it is a special thrill to find basenjis so close to home

  • He could have low thyroid and needs medication. He should have a complete thyroid test done not just a t4.

I did see some B pups for sale on Oodle in Easton, PA for $230. I believe this is close to Freemansburg. They were posted just a week ago.

  • Sounds like she went to a BYB for her puppy… doubt that it would have been tested for Fanconi... and wonder if even AKC registered?

  • I also found another breeder about 35-40 miles away, Fortora Farms in Analomink, PA. They have B pups for sale on their website and on Puppyfind.

  • I saw the listing in Analomink and that is only like 30 min from where I work. I even talked to him he said his were DNA tested and clear but there were several other breeds of puppies listed on his site which sent the red lights flashing and I looked elsewhere.

And I think you made the right choice….. IMO... of course since I have your boy's litter sister... I am a bit shaded in my opinion...ggggg

  • yes i'm glad I got chief! and I think he is starting to feel at home he is all over the place and his tail has more curl than when we first brought him home. He and zoe are wrestling on the couch over a chew they seem to be sharing . I just wish hubby wouldnt worry so much he thinks zoe will hurt him and is always breaking them up. He wont believe me when I say that things are going just as they should. Besides he weighed in at 12 1/2 lbs at the vet yesterday so she only has around 4 lbs on him if that.

Speaking of computers and basenjis - Kipawa lays beside me and then tosses his head around and hits the 'delete' key with his nose!

@Flash: Good to hear of another Aussie! The breeder I got my basenji bitch from and will get my second b from is: Kay and Ross Eldred from NSW - both lovely people and wonderful with basenjis. Where abouts are you? I'm in Canberra. I'd love to hear more about your expanding b family - particularly whether your 2 basenjis are working out well together. Well, well, well, what a small world it is ??? :). Saba is by Kay and Ross's gorgeous Zulu, out of a Wazazi bitch, and Ochre is by their stunning Rusty, also out of a different Wazazi bitch :). I think I like my Wazazi/Jebelmarra puppies… I only just, (a couple of weeks ago), emailed Kay, after Rusty's fabulous win at Sydney Royal... I am in Tassie, about 35 kms south of Hobart, on a wonderful 13 acres, with my hubby, and 2 daughters... The B's love it too, although no free running on the property, for them :p, but we have a large fully fenced, (9 feet high), off lead area, for them and the Cattle Dogs too.... I got Saba first, and really had no thoughts of getting another for a while, Yeah right !!! 12 months later, along came Ochre :D. (Im very glad they only come into season once a year, or Dog knows how many we would have by now...). Now another 12 months and I might be getting another, I must have rocks in my head !!! Perhaps you will do the same thing too, and get another one next year :D. They are very moorish, arent they ??? A bit like chippies, hey... We had no problems at all with introducing Saba and Ochre. Saba was a touch put out, but he was soon playing very happily with his new pal... They get on very well together. Ochre takes everything in her stride, and I think Saba would love another little girl in his harem... I dont predict I will have any problems, if I do get another little girl, (thats what I am hoping for !!!), this year, either. Ochre is a very temperamentally stable little lass, who would adjust quickly to another girl, I think !!! Also, during the last 4-5 months, we have added another Cattle Dog as well. He currently lives in the house with the 2 B's, and he is about 6 months old now. Ochre gives him a hard time, and does get a little cranky with him at times, otherwise she is ok. Saba was being very dominant with him, in the house, so in the house they arent let out together, (either Nosh, the Cattle Dog, or Saba is loose, and the other is crated...), but they are happy to race around the off lead area we have, together, which Im pleased about... Saba isnt as tolerant with other dogs, particularly other males, but, we deal with that ;). They are both our first Basenji show dogs, we show the Cattle Dogs, which we are enjoying. Saba is having a few issues on the table at the moment, and we are working on this, and Ochre is showing very well, with pleasing results so far :). She is going to be a very slow maturer, (thanks Rusty, and to a lesser degree, her Mum Electra :D), so her time will come later :). My OH and I lived in Canberra, in the early 90's, both nursed at Woden Valley Hospital. Great memories of the place. First in Waniassa, (sp?), then Bungandore, (sp?), till we came back home to Tassie... So what is the breeding of your first Jebelmarra dog ??? Then obviously the next question is, who is the potential parents of this years puppy ??? Looks like we will be able to pass the time away, firstly, hoping for our new puppy to be conceived, then "grown", then born, then the VERY long time waiting to get it at 8-10 weeks. I think I am ahead of you slightly, cos Electra was mated on the 16th April, your guys are "having fun", at the moment, I think... SORRY ;):p:)... Gee, this has turned into a bit of an epic :D

@barklessk9: Where are you located in Michigan? I am in the Lansing area. I have seen a few B's over the years and each time I rubber-necked and then pulled the car over to jump out and talk to the person. I probably look like a loon, but I can't help myself with B's! Linda Hi Linda from Lansing. We're in Livonia! I wanted to pull over - but didn't because of the thought I'd look like a loon too! Next time I will, if I ever get another opportunity. The few times I've seen other Basenjis was by intention - a plan to meet up with a couple owners through this forum and at Pet shows.

You should call animal control and report a dangerous dog running loose. No one should have to deal with that type of danger when walking their dog.

@jessi76: I used a dog daycare often when my dog was young, and still use it on occassion. I looked for the same things ChaseandZahrasmom's mentioned, but I also chose the one I use because it's the same place I train my dog. The staff in the daycare knew my dog from classes, they used the same training methods throughout the day (so it continually reinforced what we learned), and it was double fenced & gated… even inside. on my dog's first day he only had a human buddy all day. then on day 2 he got introduced to another dog, close in age/size/temperment. day 3 they added another friend. They kept a file listing his "friends" so the staff always knew what playgroup to put him in. They took special care during the cold months and rainy weather to keep him warm & dry. and they only crated for 1 hr during the work day. the place I use is $25/day, which to me and my budget is alot of money, but I also think it's a very fair price to pay for the quality of care my dog gets there, which is really most important. If you have multiple places to choose from in your area, I'd drop by un-announced, so you can see what a typical day is like. Showing up without an appointment sounds like a good idea. I didin't think about that. Thank you :)
