    OK I take Buddy to the vet for an x-ray and they take him in the back. 10 minutes later the vet tech comes out with Buddy by the collar and his leash in the other hand. "oh didn't you know about the escape trait"? :D


    Lupin will actually take this leash back and replace it for free. :p

    I always spray all my leashes with Bitter apple. It doesn't stop the chewing, but it does slow them down.

    He loves to chew. On walks if there's a twig or small branch he has to stop and bust it up. My other Basenjis never chewed the leash like this character. :rolleyes:

    My old vet learned the hard way with towels. Kananga shredded their towels when he was isolated after surgery. I remember them telling me "oh he'll be out of it for the rest of the day anyways". I guess he had enough energy…. :D

    hahahaha great!

    Buana did that once when he was a young dog… we were eating in de restaurant and we checked him almost every minute (he was plaing underneeth the table) and a minute later my mom says "hey, that's a great looking Basenji at the other site of the restaurant, playing with those people" OMG it's Buana!

    They always are going with us to the restaurant, most people around us aks us when we leave "did you have those dogs during your whole time with you???" (they only could smell it from the little treats we have with us, they love it so much :D)

    Hah, Paco did the same thing to his first leash when we leashed him in the kitchen with his food while we ate pizza in the next room. Had to get a new leash and switch to keeping him on the balcony for such occasions.

    Blaze is famous at our vet's… he went in for surgery and while recovering, he ate his cone, the harness off of himself, the vet wrap on his leg, the three leashes and one vet assistant's coat hanging on his kennel, and his bedding. They removed everything.
    He ate his neighbour's bedding, vet wrap, and was working on his cone when they caught him. This was through chainlink fence.
    They weren't even surprised when I had to bring him in for eating an umbrella last year.

    LOL, that's amazing! They don't call him Blaze for nothing!:D He ate an umbrella?? So he swallow pieces of it and you had to get him into the vet for it? This guy is a machine!

    Yup, three metal spines and the majority of the fabric. He also has a fish allergy, and of course the fabric was coated in a fish oil to repel water… his reaction to fish is known as "3-foot-rocket-butt". During his recovery, I was torn between relief, sympathy, anger, and disgust. The worst part... he was 14 when he did that! Thankfully he's slowed down since then...
    I do it for the snuggles. As long as he's not shooting anything out of his rear, he's welcome on my bed for snuggles.:D

    Impressive. You have to love how determined Basenjis can be when they need to get something done, even if it doesn't make sense. :D

    Looks can be so deceiving- here is an article of a woman who adopted a rescue dog in N.J. Dog looks like a basenji - even her vet thought it might be basenji. She did an Embark DNA test - no basenji. Turned out the dog was a mixture of Mountain Cur, Rat Terrier, Beagle, and Boston Terrier. link text

    Where I am it costs about $2K+ for a dog from a breeder for just about any breed. Goldens may be less because the litters are so large. That may seem like a lot, but, as Debra mentions, dogs cost money to care for. After vet bills and boarding fees and food, it matters little what the dog cost to acquire. Leaving true puppy mills out of the discussion, given the costs of being a responsible breeder -- testing, vet bills, feeding -- and how much work breeding is, I can't imagine anyone doing it for the money. That leads to two problems for people looking for dogs. One is that since breeding isn't really lucrative, there aren't a ton of breeders, which means the supply of pups is low. Second is that most Basenji breeders want to place their pups in the best possible homes -- remember they aren't doing it for the money -- which means they're looking for people who have had Basenjis before. Something of a Catch-22.

    I always vary feeding time a bit. It is a trick I learned after the first show with my horse... He was not a happy camper when one of his classes delayed dinner time. Being less rigid with the time and more rigid with a routine has made the time change a non-issue (though the horses have not had to learn to sit, they do have to wait for me to give the 'eat' signal before they get their grain like my b's have to wait for their 'eat' command).

    @phoenix3: Looks like a B to me but i think more of a B mix he looks like he has corse hair Maybe be has the size of a cattledog body and a basenji head :) My Aspen is a cattledog/ terrier mix he has the body of a cattledog {the colors} and the height and face of a terrier heres a pic so u can see the colors of the cattledog well one color anyways :D :D phoenix3 - this is Aspen? I'm so amazed at her spots, because my Daisy has spots like Aspens. We know her mother is pure R/W Basenji and she is thought her other half Beagle. One of her other litter mate moms thought Blue Healer (cattledog). But I subscribed to the Beagle. Daisy could be … Cattle Dog I suppose. She's bigger than Duke now at almost 9 months old. I will show her off soon on "Show Off" forum soon.

    @felakuti: our felakuti goes barooooooo when he is very very happy. :) we decided to get that little female basenji at Debbie's Petland, the one with the 5 toes..We have named her Queen Nyahbinghi after a warrior queen of the 19th century in Uganda…her call name is Nyah. :) so now we have two lovedoveys. :) Good luck with your pup….. hopefully you got her for a reasonable price... I would be interested to know if AKC papers came with her... and what the breeding is, if available.... also would hope that with the time she spent in the Pet Store, this will show them that a Basenji is not a good business decision.....
