Basenji in magazine

Basenji Talk
  • I just was looking through the new Drs Foster and Smith magazine and found a basenji going down some stair steps. Too bad I don't think a B would use them to get on the bed, they don't slow down enough to be able to use the steps.

Item located on website as well.

  • I think this has been posted before, but funny none the less. I agree though that they would never use the stairs. :D

  • Thanks, Michael. I wonder how much time it took to coax that basenji to use those stairs. I bet after one use the novelty would wear off. These are great, though, for dogs with hip problems.

  • I got a set for Cody when he was 13 and he used them, Trog and Xander used them from day one in our house and zoom up them. Our Whippet Annie coaxed Xander up the stairs the first time by lifting his butt and ploping in on each stair till he reached the bed.

Trust me, when they get old they use them. I have two sets of stairs, one purchased and one home made… and now with the two new pups, they both use them...

That said, a young, healthy Basenji would not, as you say, slow down enough to use them

  • Yeah, Medjai moves way to quick. He comes in the room full speed and even if I am sitting in front of the bed, he clears me to get on the bed. He will start his jump several feet from the bed. Although I guess it is inevitable, but I hope he never slows down.

  • I bought one for Blaze last year as he would walk up to the bed then whine, then make a feeble attempt to get up and we had to help him. He refused to use them! Every once in a while he still does the feeble whine thing, but usually he just takes a running jump. He's still pretty agile for 16.

Wow another thing to boast about the Basenji, I already can't say enough to people when they ask what breed Kaiser is, people must think I'm a showoff. Jolanda and Kaiser

It's a very well-written article and I think it accurately describes the basenji's idiosyncrasies that we all know and love and that the average person would find frustrating. I think the take-home message for those who don't know basenjis is that they should educate themselves more before taking the "plunge". Personally, I was thrilled to see a b/w pictured. My only complaint is that the main cover dog wasn't a basenji!

@Thana: she does have basenji characteristics then apart from her colours and looks.- i also think she must have some basenji blood! She is lovely and lucky no matter what! adorable little face:))))) Having read about the characteristics I think she does. The lady with the basenji that we met also commented on some of the things she was doing as "very basenji" (eg. standing on her back legs so she could see what was going on). Has a lovely wrinkly forehead too. Got very frustrated with me earlier and did her funny bark, more of a wierd howl really. She is def one of a kind. Its a shame we have to have her spayed (not that I could ever justify letting her have a litter).

@phoenix3: Looks like a B to me but i think more of a B mix he looks like he has corse hair Maybe be has the size of a cattledog body and a basenji head :) My Aspen is a cattledog/ terrier mix he has the body of a cattledog {the colors} and the height and face of a terrier heres a pic so u can see the colors of the cattledog well one color anyways :D :D phoenix3 - this is Aspen? I'm so amazed at her spots, because my Daisy has spots like Aspens. We know her mother is pure R/W Basenji and she is thought her other half Beagle. One of her other litter mate moms thought Blue Healer (cattledog). But I subscribed to the Beagle. Daisy could be … Cattle Dog I suppose. She's bigger than Duke now at almost 9 months old. I will show her off soon on "Show Off" forum soon.

OMG, TRUST me…its not only ur baby, Jack has some seporation anxiety, i mean, we rescued him so that may be why, but i Always feel so sad when we leave him, he runs to the window and crys when we leave, but i KNOW it wonly lasts until he cant see us anymore (driving away) my neighbor watched for me. but SOMETIMES he does get into things when we leave for too long. like the other day, when he ate my betta fish food...grr...
