Not Socializing Just Passing By

    We've been working on loose leash walking in our nabe & in the backyard. We took our B's to the park yesterday to get some air & walk along the park bike path. I was NOT trying to socialize. My husband went up ahead with C3PO & he got anzy when passing up a group of dogs playing frisbee with their owner but eventually settled down & he kept on walking. My husband actually got C3 to SIT & watch from a distance :eek:

    On the other hand Miss TOPAZ decided she was going to cut across in front of me head for these dogs with or without me. I kept trying to pull her back to my side & keep walking in another direction & I got nipped twice with all her excitment. She was completely uncontrollable. I tried my best to keep the leash loose to show that we were just walking by but this gave her more slack to keep pulling the direction of the dogs. I finally had to pick her up under my arm & keep moving.

    It was very frustrating:( my husband insisted we keep going back & forth until she got used to it. After a couple of tries she walked by still looking in that direction (I could NOT get her attention AT ALL) but at least I didn't have to pick her up.

    It's very frustrating when they completely disregard you! How do I manage this situation?? I'm trying not to tense up but when she's pulling like a maniac at the other end of the leash it's hard. I dont' get why?? The other dogs where minding their owner NOT HER!

    I like this park & so would they if theylearned to enjoy the scenery & keep moving.

    sounds to me like you did an excellent job of managing it! I'd say keep at it, it'll get better with practice. the only thing i'd add is bring along some treats. I use a treat bag attached to my belt loop (but fanny packs work well too!). give a treat when Topaz walks calmly by a very distracting area (such as other dogs playing frisbee). continue to reward when she maintains a loose leash. you can even use the treat as a lure to keep her focused on you - when she makes eye contact and minds you, she gets the treat. I'd use very high value treats - such as cheese, hot dog pieces, chicken… etc. a regular dog cookie may not be enough to keep her attention. other than that though, it really sounds like you're managing just fine!!

    I can only walk loose leash when Duke has a head collar on. I have not mastered, nor do I want to try loose lease with a regular collar on him until he's maybe 2 years old. He is now 11 mos and is still high energy puppy. The head collar is a life saver for me - because Duke controls whether he is comfortable or not. I got tennis elbow using a regular leash. (still recovering)

    My husband says I can't keep her locked away in the house forever…altho I'd like too!! :D

    Let's all just be thankful that B's are small dogs and not 110 Lbs beast! At least we can pick them up and tuck them under an arm and walk away with them while training! LOL! I have to do the same thing with Zahra sometimes.

    if she does it again, just stop there and don't go farther. after a few sec, start to walk the other way and stop if she does it again! try a teart and a clicker too.

    I think that Basenji people have to have a special sense of humor to choose this breed in the first pace, and Basenjis have the same sense of humor, doing things that crack us up and then cuddling up and demanding attention and love. Of course we love our Basenjis and want to gush about them...it comes with Basenji territory!!!!

    One thing that MIGHT help is to really exercise and wear her out before you go out. But I do think obedience classes will be a great boon for both her listening during distractions and being around other dogs. It would be very helpful if you can find a few buddies that will go walk with you ... keeping the dogs on leash, separated, but just strolling around getting used to being around but not playing with another dog. You may get a lot more out of it if you have obedience well underway first, so that you are fine tuning her there. Mary's site has just about every basic training, and she is simple and easy to understand. http://www.clickerlessons.com/index.htm Okay so on your dog mix... If you can afford it, I'd do a wisdom panel. It isn't cheap, but it is excellent. I hope for your sanity they find your dog is NOT actually a Carolina dog because ouch. Both basenjis and carolina dogs are "primitives"... and although Basenji DNA is more consistent than the Carolina dog (which has a lot of other breeds mixed in since they lived wild in the USA with a lot of other breeds around to mate with, whereas until recent times Basenjis were more isolated from other groups), you've got a double dose of "yeah maybe I'll listen, maybe I won't... and I really am good at running off and doing my own thing." Having the DNA might help show how much of the primitive genes are in there. Sadly the Wisdom Panel doesn't test for Carolina dog as a breed, and I can't find any that do. But they can look for those primitive lines. That said, having lived in SC and living in GA, I have met a few Carolina dogs. Obviously with my love for Basenjis and Chows, I'm fond of the primitives. But you have to train smart. Really glad you found the forum, will be fun watching her mature!

    I think it was Mirtillo that there was a video of playing with coke bottles…Jack got one down off the counter the other day and I started to let him keep it.....but then I thought better. I don't want him to think that if he gets something off of the counter I will let him keep it. Plus, there are lots of bottles I would rather he not get into (Finlandia, Jack Daniels, Jameson's). I think I will start letting him play with those (empty plastic bottles). They are the cheapest toy ever! Duke- I'm really embarrassed that I got you and Phoenix mixed up- really sorry....things are going well, though, hanks for asking. Jack hasn't been able to come down lately because we have been sanding and painting, and we didn't want for him to a) breathe in nasty fumes and sawdust and things that are bad or b) get a lovely little noseprint in the middle of a freshly painted wall! LOL! Moving day is May 24th. Jack is going to stay at a friend's house, to avoid the trauma of him having to see us move all of his things out of the apartment.

    @tanza: I am glad that you went to Midge…. I am too actually. I have been so incredibly pleased with Dallas. He is such a great basenji :) Plus I know Midge is there if I have any problems, I was a bit worried in that respect about Dee since it seems she breeds a lot & does it as more of a business.

    Very nice work Basenjibratz! They look totally comfortable! And I agree that once the basenjis are used to other dogs, and have a chance to acclimate, often things go quite well. It is that initial interaction that often goes so well! You have done some great work.
