Oddly enough, there is another person in Spain needing to rehome their Basenji puppy. The fellow's girlfriend does not like dogs. The topic is "Basenji puppy for adoption (Spain)" and the guy is @Luc21. Hope you can contact him.
Basenji Puppies for sale- SW Wisconsin

Roxandsweet–-welcome to the board and Merry Christmas!! You may want to go through and read some of the older threads, intros, health, and breeding information to get yourself acquainted with what is the norm in the basenji breed.
You will find that the acceptable minimum of health-testing in basenjis prior to breeding is: hips, fanconi, and eyes. Adding in thyroid gets your dog a CHIC number. Since you have a litter on the ground, you will have plenty of money to complete the health-testing on your pair once the pups have go to their new homes….8 weeks of age or later. I would actually make the appointment now for them... then you can get it done for sure when she is in anestrus... a good time would be 12 weeks after delivery date.Don't forget to order your Fanconi Tests for your puppies when they are about 2 weeks old. You can do the swabs when they are only 3 weeks old and have the results back before the pups are 8 weeks old! This is what a reputable breeder would do when breeding a litter involving a carrier. It will tell you which are clears and which are carriers, prior to sending the pups to their new homes.
I think folks posting here need to understand that anyone naming their dogs using a well-known [previously or currently used] kennel name, is generally not going to be a reputable breeder… these dogs are older, almost 4 and 6. Give her a break, and the benefit of the doubt.
Good luck with your pups... that is a lot of puppy poop to clean up!

Steph,
Please start your puppy search at BCOSW.
There is a pretty extensive breeder directory there, and if those breeders do not have puppy plans, they can probably direct you to others who do.
You may need to wait to get the right puppy from the right breeder, but be patient.

In addition to probably clear, there is nothing wrong with a pup that is a probable carrier. And as Nicole said, there are plenty of options for breeders in the general WI area, they just may not all be breeding litters this year. I know of at least 3 litters that were whelped this year, and there are least that many planned for next year.
And any ad that states "barkless" and "non-shedding" is a warning sign IMO.

Looks like this person is just trying to sell puppies. There is very little information on the ad. Unfortunately, folks like stephmarieh will fall into the trap and buy a pup form one of these unscrupulous "breeders" and then pay the price later.
I tried to find out what the other three ads were on that classifieds website, but couldn't find a link to them. Wonder if they were for more pups and what breeds? Almost sounds like a puppy mill.
BTW: I've noticed the thread starter hasn't been on to answer any questions.
-
Are these 13 puppies all from the same sire/dam?
-
I would be pretty sure it is two different litters
-
Would be good to get the fanconi info on the second set of sire/dam.

It's all good….I have been working with basenjis for 11 years and have been in love with them as well. I am not a breeder. I am not one of these people who will fall for anything. I'm quite smart...... I do however give everyone a chance. I also will not rush into anything. I have been looking for the perfect basenji as a companion for my current dog Isis for the past year. I have looked at BRAT and BCOW. I am not buying a puppy..... I would love to but my Isis does not react well to puppies. She enjoys a more mature dog as a friend. As a side note, I found it rather offensive that I would be put into any categories as 'people like'. Sorry for calling you out.....
At the same time, I don't just trust breeders or any basenji fanatic. I take things on a case by case basis. Just because I was willing to give an individual a chance does not mean I'm a sap.
Also, I don't claim to think that others are on the computer less do to a personal flaw. Some people are just not into computers as I or you. After the messages posted, why should they respond....It wasn't a warm welcome.
I would rather be informative and help those who are new to the basenji community and help them rather that discourage them. Did they perhaps not know what they were getting in to, yes, but that doesn't mean that we have to shun them.
I love the breed above most humans, so pardon my bias, but if that means helping even though the dogs were not breed under the best conditions then fine. I am not encouraging anything but perhaps doing my part to help the breed and the dogs. It’s not the puppy’s fault that they were born but they can still be loved.
Education is the only way to change and fix things.....
Sorry for the rant but I do not like being put in 'typed' box

Oh, by the way…..I probably have the worst experience with dealling with basenji breeders.....i bought a basenji from an individual that happened to murder her mother....and I found out after i bought the dog when i went back to ask for advise....trust me... i may sound nice at first but i am never..."one of those folks".....

Also, it may be a mill. there are alot in WI. But you have to remember, how are we to stop if we just come at them with agression. There needs to be proof, picures and such. How are we to stop it if we just badger them.
Next time be kind, get in with them and see the real truth. Then fix it…..

Who came at them with aggression? People asked questions, and gave advice, and expressed hurt at the used of a venerated kennel name.
Then, after over a month of no responses from the inital poster, mentioned to you that their ad had several warning signs of a puppymiller/BYB.
I'm not trying to be argumentative. I am honestly asking, because I don't see what could come off as aggressive to the initial poster.
I can understand you being upset at being called "folks like" in reference to people who can be sucked in by a puppymiller/BYB without us really knowing you well. That was regrettable, but I'm sure Belinda didn't mean any harm by it.
Except that - what else would you change to make it so that we came off less aggressive, yet still got the point across well?
I would still invite you to come to some of our BCOSW events. We really are a great group of people, and you will get to meet tons of breeders and basenjis right in your area.

The posts that I saw asked them to comply with the forum rules, asked about the use of a kennel name that is associated with a well respected historical figure in the breed, and asked about specifics of their litter(s). I don't see people being harsh. I do see the conversation jumping around a bit but that is a frequent occurrence in forum threads.
How can any "see the real truth" if they cannot ask questions and the person has not complied with the posting requirements of the forum?

"i am looking for a very specific pup."
"I am not buying a puppy….. "
Just confused. :o

Could be just referring to a dog as a "pup". They are still puppies inside at times, right?

Steph, there are so very bad breeders out there. BUT, I have had the pleasure of knowing MORE good basenji breeders. I suggest you touch base with someone who does basenji rescue in your area. * WE know who are good folks and who aren't*
Cause, we p/u the "litters" the bad ones produce. I agree, that what I read was not
harsh, just asking questions.
If a person claims the dogs are fanconi free, and are called to answer questions on that, it don't seem mean to me…just seeking more info.
not trying to pick a fight with you, honestly, this is just my point of view.
I think many of us have educated new basenji folks into the inforamtion they should have gotten when they p/u the dog from the pet shop...
When you know better re dogs and breeding and rescue, you do better.
Again, I hope I give no offense. -
It has been interesting watching this thread. No, I am not a puppy mill. We had first hand experience with a Basenji and year and a half ago (our own) and love our Roxy. When we were looking for another one, we had a very difficult time finding another one. Possibly not looking on the right sights but be that as it may, we also had a number of people interested in one due to their experience with our dog. That is when we decided to breed on a very small scale. We had one litter last year, which all new owners are very happy with their puppies and we stay in touch with the owners. This year we had two litters and that is the most we will have at any time. Both litters have the same sire and both dams and the sire have been Fanconi tested which can be seen on the OFA site. We have had them vet-checked and the puppies are vet-checked as well as shots given and dewormed. All puppies are in our home and well socialized. They are not left to be in a crate. We've seen the lack of social skills this causes. Our puppies are socialized with other dogs as well. I haven't put up the additional information as one of the questions asks the weight of dog(s)/puppies for sale. That is rather hard to do with growing puppies. As I stated before, two of our dogs already had registered names when we bought them and therefore we meant no dishonor by simply retaining the names. We are new to the breed but are enjoying it and are enjoying meeting people who love them as much as we do. I am not on this forum often but I did want to make some clarifications. I will get more information up as soon as possible.
-
Choosing not to comply with Forum rules because you can't answer one question is not a good excuse. You continue to say your dogs are Fanconi tested and yet still have not given their names so that information can be verified on the OFA website.
-
Lisa,
They did give the name of the stud and one bitch.
Roxandsweet -
barkless and non-shedding are a pretty deceptive way to title an ad. While basenjis don't bark, they are far from mute, and they definitely shed, although maybe not as much as some other breeds.I am willing to give new breeders a chance, but that ad has a lot of the hallmarks we tend to look for in a puppymill/BYB.
No testing info on the ad. No names and pedigrees of the sire and Dam.
Bitch shown pregnant or heavily lactating, because in many puppymills, the bitches are never not pregnant or lactating.I am not saying you are a puppymill, I am just pointing out where the assumption came from.
Since you are here, I am hoping that you will take advice given, like Kathy's advice on getting hips and eyes tested on your dogs in addition to fanconi.
I also hope that you are taking responsibility for any dog you have bred for the life of the dog, and making sure that it is in your contract that you must be given back any dog you bred if the buyer cannot keep it for any reason for the dog's entire life.-Nicole
