Laryngeal Paralysis

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • Our basenji, occassionally starts "hacking" or almost a cough, like she is trying to clear her throat. Obviously she has been to the vet who suggested it might be Laryngeal Paralysis, a condition were her larnex muscles can restrict her breathing. She is almost 13 years and otherwise in excellent health. has anybody else experienced this in basenjis? Its not common in our breed according to the vet.

While it is not common to our breed, I believe it is common to older dogs in general.

  • Thank you for the reply, Were off to see the vet this Mon. just as a precaution and to gain more info. Doesn't seem to stop our B' from chasing squirrels in the back yard but we've got to take care of our baby, you know? I've read alot of the health care posts and some sounded similar regarding bronchitis. I'll mention this info to the doc. Dave

  • I sure understand.. my Maggii had something simular for the last 4yrs of her life (we lost her at 16yrs 9months. The only thing that we found was that repeated coughing would lead to an irritation to the throat, so we had cough pills (they were narcotics) that we could give her if really bad. It stops the coughing … but not the "reason"... Like you noted it never slowed her down.

  • Cant offer any info Dave but hope everything goes ok for your girl on Monday. How about a pic :)

  • @NerdyDogOwner:

This sounds more like your regular Kennel cough.

I agree with their Vet's call on this dog… considering the age and the description. My Maggii had this and it is not an uncommon condition for elders and what they have described is exactly what Maggii did. Of course it is a good idea to rule out other conditions.

@Saving Thanks so much for the information! I am researching further and continuing with her rehab exercises as best I can. Glad you recovered from your spinal injuries.

Did she always have them or did they start after something/some time? Do antihistamines clear the problem?

@Rebel - Full blood workup including full Thyroid panel (full panel no just what the normal vet workup that is not a full thyroid panel)... as they say make sure that he is in good health. Also what are you feeding him? How much total are you feeding a day? Also with reducing food, add veggies to his food to fill his belly... green beans are good to use... I use Cauliflower and Broccoli... Note also that low normal is typically too low for Basenjis.

Had you opened a new bag around the time this started? Sometimes they change ingredients or suppliers of ingredients, which is the way an allergen can sneak in....

To give you an idea of the contrast between Basenjis and Border Collies, my BC once spit out a pill, I said "Blackie" in a disapproving tone, and he picked it up from the floor and swallowed it!
