New baby in Texas family

Member Introductions
  • Hello from Azle, Texas USA! I have a new baby in the family named MAX. Had 2 basenjis over 8 years ago and very very unfortunate circumstances that forced us to rehome them through BRAT. In spite of being a "hypoallergenic" dog - my human son showed severe allergic reactions that put him in the hospital 2ce. He was treated daily for over 2 years after this. We have no idea to this day exactly what it really was but he has been proven clear of animal allergies.

We are very grateful to have this new addition. I have waited a long time to get him and love him already. He is very smart and paper trained with treated pads in less than 20 hours. (WOW!) I am uncertain about much of his background but he is in good hands here. We bought him from a breeder near Houston and have had him for 5 days now.

  • PHotos please!

  • Welcome from us in Houston..
    Sharron is right…pictures please..

I am sorry to here about your son's allergies, I am glad you are able to have Max in your lives now though..he sounds adorable..

  • Congratulations on your new baby - he will be a wonderful addition to your famiy - please send pics asap!

  • Being "hypoallergenic" is one of the biggest incorrect advertising of this breed… while they are usually good with people with allergies, they are by no means hypoallergenic...

Good luck with your pup... curious about your statement about not knowing much on his background? Didn't the breeder give you all that?

  • So happy to hear that you have a new four legged son. Sounds like Max is happy and perfect. Wish you the best.

@eeeefarm: Active Basenjis normally have a good appetite and will eat themselves fat if given the opportunity. Would it were so. I know many like my first and 3rd who eat only to stay alive. I ALWAYS ALWAYS believed that picky eaters are made, not born. Sayblee proved me wrong by reaching skeletal range.. massive testing.. nothing. We started her on cyproheptadine, no problems from then on. Now, Cara also a problem. I do agree with everyone though… free feeding is rarely good and never with a problem eater. And that higher quality food is very good. They need less to get far better nutrition.

I dont have any pics right now she is so active its hard to get any good ones. And when she tugs my daughters diaper i do redirect her. she is just trying to get my daughter to play with her. i have seen the vet he believes she was around 7-8weeks and she has had her dewormer and her first set of shots. He was amazed at how healthy she had become once we rescued her. She was sooo tiny when we first got her. BUt she is def thriving and gaining lots of weight.

@dorvaan: He's gonna be incredibly picky about his toys. We got him 5 different ones, to begin with. He ignores all of them, except for one. Now, little rawhide bones? That's a whole 'nother story….. If he spent a lot of time in a kennel he might not be used to playing with toys. If he likes food-based toys you could try a stuffed kong or or something like these… http://www.premier.com/View.aspx?page=dogs/products/behavior/busybuddy/squirreldude/description http://www.triplecrowndogs.com/product/1591/Everlasting-Treat-Ball.html You can get them on Amazon or a lot of other websites. I saw the treat-ball at Petco. And if you are interested in taking the puppy to a eye doc, I can get some recommendations for you. There are a lot of basenji people in the southern part of the state and I can get some references for you when I meet up with the basenji club this weekend.
