Rectal bleeding + soft stool

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • I hope he is better and home with you soon.
Its awful when our b's aren't well.
    Hugs

  • I had an identical problem with AJ. Vet tested his stool, no bacteria. He ate and drank normally, energy level was not affected. However: The day before this started, I took him in to a PetSmart to have his nails trimmed. He was so upset by this, he crapped as soon as we were out of the store. Everything was fine until the following day and the diarrhea cycle started. It was the same thing…poop the runs, go about 15 feet and squat again, then go another 15 feet and squat...each time straining like there was something else in there. Vet called it Idiosyncratic Diarrhea which basically meant he had a case of the runs for no apparent reason.

He gave AJ a shot that made him sleep soundly for a full day except when I got him out to go potty. When AJ woke up the day after the shot, he was fine. The long sleep gave his body time to reset and get back to normal. If diarrhea is allowed to continue, it will cause enough irritation in the bowel for it to begin bleeding. This, in turn, can cause existing normal bacteria to get places it isn't supposed to be, which creates a cascade of other problems.

I believe the nail trim did it. I had taken him to a groomer at a pet store about three months previous to this. I had to leave him there for about an hour so they could groom him. When I returned for him, he was so anxious to get out of there he climbed over the half door at the counter. I think the memory of being left in, basically, a dog prison and the smells that went with it were enough to set him off. We haven't been to a store groomer since. Haven't had any diarrhea lasting more than one poop since either.

(Added text) AJ always either throws up or gets the runs from pork. He does not get pig ears because of this. Besides…I picked a load up at a pig ear factory. No way I'd consider that edible for a dog after what I saw there.

  • Topper had diarrhea off and on for several weeks and finally some bloody stools last year. The vet couldn't find anything and the stool specimen seemed OK when they looked under the microscope. As we were leaving, the vet tech ran out, she found hookworms in his stool. We treated him for that and he was good as new in about 3 days.

Hopefully your boy will feel better soon!

  • IPSID is common in basenjis. It is usually diagnosed by elimination, so all other causes need to be eliminated first, but it is something to be aware of.

The yellow can also be indicative of EPI, especially if it is soft and cow-patty like. This is also something to ask your vet about.

    Hope some of this helps.

  • I don't think it's Idiosyncratic Diarrhea, he has had it for close to two weeks total now, but I will still mention it. Thanks.

So far I have noted down IPSIS, EPI, Gardia, and hook worms.

    EDIT:
Just came back from the vet. I feel confident. She told me they were gonna take some xrays to make sure everything was ok inside. I also took a stool sample with me. Sounds like they had all bases covered.

Naturally I forgot the note with all your suggestions, but they are gonna call me later and I will ask what tests were run, and if the mentioned where tested as well.

  • Hmmm…diarrhea started roughly the same time as your humping post. Wonder if they're connected?

  • Haha, oh lord I hope not! Anyways, he was "safe"…no red lipstick out of the holster as he was doing that. ;)

Besides, he was doing it wrong anyways...lol

Hmmm, do then make chastity belts for male dogs? :D

  • :D Actually, they do…most ppl just put britches on the girls, though.

  • Well, just got off the phone with the vet. Everything seems fine. Xrays etc showed nothing out of the ordinary inside him. She also looking inside his colon with a camera, and they took a blood test (which we will have to wait for results).

What she did know, was he had high amounts of white blood-cells, which could be a result of stress (his separation anxiety came to mind), as well as an infection of some sort. We will be treating him with antibiotics until the blood tests come in, and he is to go back to his kibble. She informed me all "Basenji" type infections will be tested, as well as the "usual suspects".

Gizmo was apparently playful, and for one unsupervised moment, he managed to get a hold of his leash and eat a chunk of it! What a guy!

So I can pick him up in one hour.

  • I am so glad to hear that he is Ok..it could be stress related..expecially since he is going through separation anxiety..

Hopefully he is back to his normal self soon…

  • The only thing I have been doing differently was moving his bed out of my room and into the living-room. But he is positioned so he can see me.

Hm, I think I will move him back in. At least until his poop is solid again (hopefully).

Gonna also buy a D.A.P. collar and see if that helps.

  • Some of the experts here feed their dogs pumpkin or sweet potatoes to firm up the poop. After you get him back on an even keel, check the nutrients in the food you have been feeding him…make sure it is appropriate for his breed, development stage and size. There are lots of great suggestions in Feeding and Nutrition.

He may have reacted to getting snarked at by that Boxer, too. It doesn't take much to set a Basenji off.

  • Our Dalmatians got this a few times and we would get them on Flagyl (metronidazole) which seemed to do the trick in a few days. It is probably listed under a different brand name in Norway. You may want to ask your vet if they think this drug may help.

  • Agree with all said above - when Gemma has that problem, too often it seems to me, the chicken, rice and cottage cheese diet seems to clear it up. She's never had the blood situation though, so have the vet check for Giardia, and follow her suggestions - best of luck to you - poor baby.

  • So happy to hear your boy is comming home and doing well. Has to get better so he can go find another kitty again. I do know Jaycee does not like change we took the sofa out and it upset her bottom end that night better next day. Then fourth day we got new sofa and upset her that day again and now all is well. I would try putting his crate back in your room. Take care.

@scagnetti said in Soft-Serve Stool: I wouldn't be surprised if you found studies that report conflicting results. That is almost always the case, isn't it ? One man's meat is indeed another man's poison - - -

I certainly have to be more careful in selecting his treats because I dont think they mix well when given for variety.. I have tried the Instinct treat bones which are venison and those are "iffy", then I use soft baked treats for training. But on any given day its normal for him to get a treat based with venison, another cheddar cheese and liver ( I cant imagine that to help a lot but he gets bored with only one treat and that leads to motivational issues) Thanks for the info :)

My Basenji had this problem on and off for years before I finally found a good solution. I actually just posted about it elsewhere in here so I'm going to attempt to quote it in here. Let's hope it works lol. @mandi2doors: Copper, my oldest, has always had a sensitive stomach and would get diarrhea out of the blue all the time, so badly that he would have blood dripping from his rear. It freaked me out the first few times it happened! The vet always tried to prescribe an antibiotic but it never helped. The way I always got rid of it was to cook a pound of ground beef (rinsed), mix with a cup of cooked white rice, a cup of cottage cheese, and a cup of plain yogurt. You feed it for about 3-4 days (I always gave him about a cup and a half a day) and then start introducing their dry food back in. A friend on another forum gave me this concoction years ago and it worked perfectly for years. Almost two years ago he got diarrhea and any time I would stop feeding the mixture it would come back. I finally consulted a holistic vet and she said I could continue feeding the mixture but needed to add some veggies to it for fiber, or I could change his dry food. She said to avoid chicken, wheat, soy, and corn. She also recommended feeding a probiotic/prebiotic several times a week in addition to two other supplements, Gastriplex and Moducare (both by Thorne). He's been on Taste of the Wild now, which is grain free (I buy the fish variety but they also have a bison/venison as well as a lamb), and and has had no problems. I'm very careful about the ingredients in the treats I give him now and have had NO diarrhea problems since changing his diet, which is absolutely wonderful! Here are the links for what I use: http://tinyurl.com/27jaroe http://tinyurl.com/2adwtqn- 1 capsule 2x per day http://tinyurl.com/276rn24 - 1 capsule 1x per day http://tinyurl.com/2g47lsp - 1 capsule about 3x per week (I give it on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays) Good luck!!

@Patty: It's good to hear that Nilo is now officially 'cured'. I agree with you about antibiotics but sometimes they are the only way to hit a disease.. Thank you Patty, it was a relief! :)

They said that there is a overgrowth of Bacteria, which is common in some dogs. So I can either give him some yogurt or a med that they are giving me, as Medjai is a very picky eater. I just figured this would be easiest for now, but I'll try yogurt next time.
