@svdreamer: We had a Basenji when I was a child. This was in 1964 that we brought him home. He lived 13 years. Jodi cried real tears twice. Once after his pancreatic surgery and he came home after being at the vets for a week. Once after my mom came home after being in the hospital for 5 days. He had tears running down his face. He would baroo when happy to see us or we were getting ready to take him on a walk, grumble under his breath when corrected, snarl at people he did not like (almost everyone not family), howl when left alone, talk to us to get our attention, and learned to bark, once, when he saw something that really excited him. For a supposedly quiet dog, he sure made some noise! I loved that dog so much and to this day, I miss him terribly. What a lovely story, thanks for sharing.

@lvoss: It has been raining most of the day here and L'Ox has been unenthusiastic to say the least about going outside. He has been doing really well on potty training and is starting to ask to go out but you could tell every time he actually got outside he was horrified by all the wet. So his remedy was to run to the edge of the covered porch and pee and rush back in. His dilemma was how to do the rest of his business without melting in the rain? So while I was in the kitchen gathering up the dog dishes I hear a clatter and see a little puppy butt escaping into the garage through the cat door. I follow him out there only to find him pooping near the cat's litter box. I guess I should be glad that he seems to be using his brain for good rather than evil right now. My little girl was like that but got out of the habit. She realized that going in the house was naughty (she wouldn't go on the toilet training mats we got her) and even though she hated her feet wet she went on the grass anyway and when she came inside she did the basenji thing and she licked it off her feet.

And, if they are eating moles, mice, voles, etc. They may need a regular round of the meds.

@renaultf1: Honestly, there is nothing cuter than baby yodels!! It is great that Malaika yodels. When Liyah was a pup, if the adults wouldn't play with her, she would bring stuffed animals to her reflection in the stereo cabinet and then would dance around and yodel to her reflection to try to get her to play :D:D. Liyah is the big talker of my 3 - when she wants Brando to play, she will pet him on his head and start talking to him - very comical! :D:D Oh, and we call Brando and Liyah the lovebirds because they are so enthralled with each other! That's so nice :)

Thanks Sinbaje. That's an impressive group of dogs you have. I'll keep your message for further reference. In researching basenjis, I come across a number of abbreviations. I'm the curious type and I just like knowing. :)

Yesterday I went to a local Petland to see if this store sold the dog that I recently rescued as it had a microchip but the owner never registered it and it goes back to the dealer. There was a female B pup for sale and it had its dewclaws. It told the salespeople that Bs are not supposed to have dewclaws and they are very easy to remove. The breeder was Wendy Dettbarn of IA. She is a long time commercial breeder for the petstores of Bs since at least the mid 90s. This pup also had round eyes and a longer coat. I have never seen a B pup with this type of coat. She was supposedly AKC registered but I thought this breeder was using APRI. I did not see the paperwork though and on the AKC website I did not see the supposedly sire and dam listed. Anyone familiar with Dettbarn's Buzz or Dettbarn's Penny or the Dettbarn's Bs?

Paco sounds like a well mannered boy :) Malaika doesn't ask, she just dives in and when Reuben snaps and chases she just comes bouncing right back for more. I can see we will have to work realy hard with her. Coincidentaly my parents have just been with Reuben (Papillon) and there was a bit of improvement although she's still to rough.

I'll show this to my niece…she has three pits and was involved in rescue until her son was born two years ago. She is a HUGE pit advocate. Sounds like something she might like.

and ensure by CKC they mean the Canadian Kennel Club and not the Continental Kennel Club, that's another not so reputable registry.

Markie, I think when adding a basenji to an existing household, it is most important to just get out and visit with lots of breeders and meet their dogs. Some families of basenjis get along great with other dogs and others are not as good. You really just need to be up front about your expectations and do some visits to see how the dogs are. That way you find a breeder with the temperaments you like and they know what you need in a pup and can match the pup with your household.

@TikaLynn: I think Basenji's just are very alert dogs, and at night there is a lot of "activity" outside we may not see, but they do! I think that's a big part of it. As they say, "ignorance is bliss". Basenjis are certainly not ignorant when it comes to their surroundings. I noticed Kananga always has his ears back when we're outside at night, or certain times during the day. He can sense something and it makes me nervous at times. :o But this is what makes them great hunters and generally great at surviving out in the open. They are smart, and with that comes anxiety since they are aware.

This is actually one of our puppies from this year. We aren't going to be showing this one but one of our other puppies. I was only asking the question because I had not seen any marked like this one. Oscar is going to a home as a pet. The sire is "Black Devil of the Congo CLG" and the dam is "Miss Sweetpea of the Congo CLG". The names were not chosen by us so we did not give them "of the Congo"! This puppy has a great disposition, just like his sire.

Mine saw horses a few years ago when we were staying at the beach. People rode horses up and down the beach all day and while Topper and Nicky just wanted to watch, Eddie really wanted to get up close and personal. I'm guessing he was thinking about horsemeat! We kept our distance as most were 'rental horses' and didn't want to spook them and harm the riders. Yep, BIG DOGS!

yes i'm glad I got chief! and I think he is starting to feel at home he is all over the place and his tail has more curl than when we first brought him home. He and zoe are wrestling on the couch over a chew they seem to be sharing . I just wish hubby wouldnt worry so much he thinks zoe will hurt him and is always breaking them up. He wont believe me when I say that things are going just as they should. Besides he weighed in at 12 1/2 lbs at the vet yesterday so she only has around 4 lbs on him if that.
