I used to always take Senji with me to the nursing home where my grandmother stayed for 1 1/2 years before she passed away. They allowed people to bring pets in to visit. Senji knew exactly where grandma's room was, even though it was down at the end of the hall. He also liked to jump into bed with grandma's roommate, who was a middle-aged stroke patient. He never got snarky or nippy at any of the other residents. It's like he knew they were old and disabled. The only time he's act up would be when he'd encounter the resident cat. 😃

We have one that's does a "High five" and now that you mention it…....it's always her left paw.

We use the seat belt/harness type for both of them. They're in the back and stay put. They just curl up and sleep.

The weird thing about the Dobie that made us think maybe Basenji is that the white spots on her are all the same markings that my Basenji mix has. Is there a dog that has the same markings as a Basenji?

Lots of dogs. That white pattern is called Irish Spotting. Off the top of my head…collies, border collies, australian shepherds, boxers, great danes...I am sure there are bunches more...

It's really sad that people can be so ignorant & generalize characteristics over an entire breed…:mad: That being said...can you imagine how owners of pits, rotties, or dobermans feel. I'm sure they get ostracized all the time for having their dogs. However, there is no need for people to be down right rude! If they want to stereotype that's their business but show a little RESPECT & above all some MANNERS! YUCK!

I would have purposely said something obnoxious (Oh please lady...I only feed my dog "quality" ingredients lol 😃 ) but that's just ME 😃 I can be pretty sarcastic when people offend me on purpose. And nasty remarks against my precious pooches...oooh god help those people!!

I do feel that more and more dog people are realizing that Basenjis aren't nasty...they are different. But it does baffle me when people need to say such rude things outloud.

Maybe we don't have that kind of folks around where we course because Dr.Tracy would kick their tushies! 😉

Mine want to sleep on long, rainy days…..like today. Once they have their first potty of the day and realize it's a downpour day, their whole demeanor changes, and it's a slow-moving, sleepy day all day.

Doggy massage are part of our training ritual. We ask them to sit & we massaage & we get them to lay on their side & rest their face on the ground while we massage.

It's a method we use to relax our "feisty dogs" we use this also when we're around other dogs & they're too aroused. WORKS WONDERS!!!!!!!! 😃

Jack has a pretty bushy tail year round. I love it, and cant make myself trim it. It goes well with his build. He seems to be a bit more muscle than most basenji's Ive seen in person and on the forum in pics and videos…Vet says hes not over weight, he has a muscular build, I love the way he looks, and i prefer the look of the bushy tail!! LOL

I saw one gal, working with her basenji in rally, get down on the ground to try to get the dog to lay down on the grass.
She just went down and the b looked at her like she was CRAZY!
We all gave her a great round of clapping when she left the ring.
B's got to love them!

Well, at least PetSmart has pulled them because of concerns. I found them missing when I went to work in our treat aisle today!!!

I'm fairly new to the world of basenjis. My boy is 3. So this may not mean a thing but I've never heard of 'wild basenjis'. Everything I've read and heard says that they have never been wild and have always been domestic/family/village dogs.

My sister-in-law and her parents lived in Africa for quite a few years when she was growing up.(Tanzania and Kenya) They said that there were many wild, mongrel-type dogs that had basenji features in their vicinity.

:o LOL - It's only 2 feet high. I know, how embarrassed am I? :o But Duke didn't jump it - a 2" x 8" lattice panel laid on it's side across the walkway that leads from the backyard to the front yard. It worked for Duke as it discouraged him from running into the front yard. I was hoping that Daisy would stay with Duke though.

This was my husbands best effort to not muscle in a gate at that point. Ha-ha-ha, now he will because I'm going to the home store and buying all the things necessary, cement, posts, and swinging gate. It was a pain in the $^% moving things over the cheap lattice panel anyway. It's what I wanted there in the first place.

I've never seen anything like this Coyote Roller! What a great idea. It looks nice too. For now, I like to be out in the yard with the kids anyway. We're stuck with the inground fence.

No, never! I smack it on my hand for the noise it makes. Both Duke and Daisy know when momma gets that roll in her hands, she's not happy about something. It works for me to get attention from them.

THanks everyone for the advice, she ended up being fine, I fed her this morning and no throw-up when we got home 🙂 I was just worried cause she has never done it more than once before. Its funny about how you said you put her over the toilet, my husband managed to hold her over the garbage when she threw up, so she looked ridiculous but at least it made no mess!

Although I have a large fenced yard with my three, I don't see the problem with not having a fenced yard. For the first 8 months I didn't have a fence-it just made me work harder to keep my B (Shadow) happy. The biggest thing is to make sure that you can change YOUR thinking. These dogs are not G Shepherds, Boxers, (which I have and a Heeler also) nor are they like any other domesticated dog. You will end up being trained by them. They are not submissive like other dogs and they think independently. You will find yourself putting things away that you never thought possible. Garbage will become a treat to enjoy (whether in the cupboard or not). Shadow has managed to pull the garbage through a small opening where my other dogs couldn't care less. I have baby locks and gates throughout my house and double doors. As has been said many times-please read the stories and then visit and THEN if and only if you can live with destruction, chaos and change and are willing to change your ways of thinking-look for a Basenji! (Sorry to be a party pooper, but we see so many returned, broken, beaten, aggressive and unhappy dogs and people we would rather you see the bad before the good.)

Most FedEx's close at 7:00 pm for overnight delivery (I'm a logistics person and make a lot of shipments with FedEx). I think sending blood has different rules, you may want to check with them.
