It's so upsetting to hear this. It makes one wonder why cancer is so common in our dogs. My two pups passed from cancer. I just recently lost Talker at 14 1/2 years of age. His niece Savannah passed at 9 years of age. I am so sorry that you have gone thru so many losses.

I'm so sorry you have lost your darling bad girl. What a wild and wonderful life she shared with you. You wrote a wonderful eulogy, I feel like I know her a little bit. The "bad" ones seem to touch us the most, it is that wildness that I love about basenjis. You were a good partner to love her as she was, and appreciate her wild heart.

@ForeverAmber: I thought it would be worse but he is doing ok. It just seems too quiet in our house without 2 Bs going at it as they play or have little squabbles. Thanks Tanza I have been viewing pics of c-me I have to wonder if she is as big as mischief I cant believe how big he got. C-Me is about normal size for a girl, leaning to the smaller side… both she and Franie are about the same size. C-Me has a lovely litter in 2012 of all Tris, this fall she will have a litter by Trip, Franie's brother. Pictures will be available on my site or FB. Glad to hear the Mischief is doing OK with the loss of his big sister.

so sorry to hear of Nicky passing, although you said you timed it so she did not suffer. You, your husband, Chipley and Eddie are the ones who have it hard now. We never truly get over the spirit of our loved fur pal while they visited us on earth, but the memories of the 'antics' get us through the grief period. Condolences to all of you, thinking of you!

Hello YodelMa, what a lovely and heartfelt eulogy. Though I am reading this a few months later, I can only guess that hole Ki left still is tender. I was doing some research about the later in life stages of older dogs, and since my lab mix Hershey is 12, he is very slow and 90% deaf. I had in mind what I want to do, when he tells me the time is near…...:( But I ran across some good information that I'd like to share from the AAHA senior care guide. the excerpt of links is here: End of Life and Euthanasia Making the Decision During the euthanasia decision-making process and after the decision is made, provide the client with resources about the process and impact of euthanasia on the family and other pets. Such resources include web sites, hotlines, books, brochures, and professional counselors for both adults and children.71-74 Web site examples include www.argusinstitute@ colostate.edu, www.rainbowsbridge.com, www.aplb.org, and www.deltasociety.org. Examples of pet loss support hotlines include those at Washington State University (509- 335-5704), the University of California-Davis (530-752- 3602 or 800-565-1526), Tufts University (508-839-5302), the Chicago Veterinary Medical Association (630-325- 1600), Cornell University (607-253-3932), and the Delta Society (619-320-3298). Consider and discuss with the client the “five freedoms” to aid in assessing the animal’s welfare and in making an ethical decision.75 The five freedoms include freedom from hunger and thirst; freedom from physical and thermal discomfort; freedom from pain, injury, and disease; freedom from fear and distress; and the freedom to express normal behavior.75 Assess the severity and duration of the animal’s condition with these freedoms in mind and use them to help clients identify their own criteria for treatment or euthanasia. Such criteria might include financial, moral, religious, cultural, physical, and mental/emotional factors.

I'm so sorry. It's always hard to lose a beloved companion, and two is way too young.

I am so very sorry, it must have been just awful for you. Mine never wear collars in the house, and we even walk in harnesses, thank you for thinking of others with your warning.

I am so sorry for your loss, she had a wonderful life with you . Cody is sad just like you are, I would expect him to grieve for days or even weeks. I suggest a new activity, or longer walks in different areas, that helped mine when we lost Topper a couple of years ago. Hugs

Sorry for your losses. I have been trying not to buy cooking/eating items made in China. I remember when I lived in Houston and there was a recall for ceramic items that had lead in them. There was a mention of testing items for lead that one could do at home and I believe send in. You might want to do a google search. Jennifer

Michelle, I am so sorry for your loss. Your story hit close to home with me. I am glad you were able to preserve Tayda's dignity. Basenjis are proud dogs and what you did was honorable for Tayda. I know, even as humans, we don't want to deteriorate and all wish to have an honorable passing. Tayda is still with you and a short divide away. She will have plenty of things to show you when it is your time. :)

I am sorry to hear about your loss. Know that Sable is waiting to greet you on the other side and will have many things to show you. I can't think of a better welcoming than a pack full of loved ones on the other side.

RIP sweet Sable. I wonder if you'll still find clumps of her fur around the house for a long time to come? May you all heal with time…
