@elbrant - I would suggest that a better choice to find a responsible breeder is to go to the parent club for the Basenji, www.basenji.org and search by state. Anyone can advertise at AKC Marketplace and not all that are on that site are responsible breeders. Make sure to do your homework first....

When you breed your bitch, you are putting her life at risk. Sure, problems don't usually happen but they occasionally do; would you know how to recognise them, and would you know what to do? I have had two emergency C-sections done and they can be quite expensive. Breeding is not cheap if you do it right, so if you think you're going to make money... -Joanne

Where are you located? I have several breeders to recommend in the midwest! In the meantime, checking the BCOA list as Tanza suggested is a good place to start. Be warned though, puppies are being born this time of the year and many breeders have waiting lists!

A lot of people get 2 pups at once, but different litters, opposite sex. I personally prefer one at a time so they bond more with humans than each other. Getting another the next season gives time to get the first settled. Of course, then you have another round of house breaking etc. A lot depends on your own experience with the breed. Good luck ... the link Pat gave you is your best bet for well bred puppies. :)

Definitely go with Tanza's suggestion. Any breeder not listed there probably is not responsible. If you find litters, post here who you are looking at and talk to folks who have their line.

Hopefully brat or camp basenji contacted the owner. More hopefully, the owner contacted the breeder who generally has first right of refusal to take back their puppies.

You can also check with Camp Basenji if you are interested in an adult rescue. I know she has tris since I have one from her. :) Pam does NOT list all her available dogs as people tend to fixate on a picture and just want THAT one. She is superb at matching people with the right dog if you are upfront about what you want and can handle. We still laugh at me wanting a NOT too laid back dog. She almost didn't let me have one, figuring SOMETHING was wrong with me wanting a tough dog. But after a while, she decided I was okay and she sent me "THE FEISTY ONE" . LOL, the having is not the same as the wanting as Spock said. Thanks for the info. I'll check those sites out. I prefer a puppy but willing to take one up to 2 years old. Sounds like I'll have to wait till winter.
