@Chrstopher: Quick question on this Fanconi Test? Does it show if he has it or does it just determine if he is a carrier for it? It will show if he is clear, carrier, or affected.

Welcome! I've met the sire of the litter, Tango, and he is a really wonderful and nice boy . Your pups and my boy are actually cousins- My pup's sire is his half brother(same dam). Good luck and can't wait to see photos when you get them!

Hi Jolanda I forgot I was registered for Basenji Forums until I got your email. I will reply to it privately, but I can tell the others on here that health testing has been done on the parents of my planned litter this year. Both have had hips done, been Fanconi tested and had eyes tested. The stud has also had thyroid done. I hope to get thyroid done on the bitch before breeding season. Christine Senjabi Basenjis

Bungwa has a very dry mouth and I only managed to get a very tiny white patch on the test card but it was still sufficient to do the test with that. It only turns white when it's dry - the instructions are quite explicit. Of course as Pat says it could be a bad test form.

@lisastewart: It still amazes me how many web sites out there make no mention of the dogs real registered names, are they afraid people might actually research the dogs health testing status or other records before commiting to a puppy. I agree. It is very common for less-than-reputable breeders to not only keep their dog's registered names a secret but many don't even post call names of the dogs. Many do not post pictures of their dogs. Or they post pictures of some of their dogs but list puppies from dogs that are not found on their website. This makes me wonder just how many dogs they actually have. What else do they have to hide? Responsible breeders are proud of their dogs and are always happy to show them off and share information about them. Would anyone else care to share with the newbies what their web sites looks like so that prospective owners can learn to tell the difference between a puppy mill website and a breeders site?: My website is www.sherwoodbasenjis.com. It needs a few minor updates but is generally kept up pretty well.

It's interesting how many Basenjis share call names - all independently chosen!

I am really looking forward to this. I haven't felt so much anticipation since I was a kid at Christmas time (and believe me that was a very long time ago)!

As mine age I try to keep a bit of weight on them because I know they may reach a stage when they just don't keep weight as the organs weaken.

Gosh, Rocky looks just a dog our neighbors adopted from the Humane Society last year! They were told 'probably' chi-basenji mix. Rocky is very cute, as they all are. Welcome!

Hi Hoot, Welcome to the forum. I wanted to introduce myself to you because I too adopted a dog for the same reasons. I wanted a companion for my Golden Retriever who is also my service dog. He had gained a lot of weight during a period where I was sick with my MS. I decided to go to our local shelter and found my baby Taz. He had a great personality and got along well with my Golden "Levi" . I too did not know what kind of dog he was until my BF figured it out. All we knew was that he was hound/terrier mixed. Little did I know he was Basenji or even what a Basenji was. I learned quickly. lol.. He too likes to chew a lot and we have to put everything out of his reach, especially cell phones (from experience) He won't mess with the remote control though. He does like to table surf and will take anything from gloves to mail to cellphones off the tables. He is a very loveable dog though. He loves to be in my lap and is a leaner. You will probably find she is very cat like as it is a trait of basenji's. My Taz likes to lean up against me when i am getting ready in the bathroom or when I am standing around. He is very partial to me though he loves my BF (not sure why) but he doesn't sit with him unless I am out of the room. I have to put baby gates up to keep him from going into the kitchen or from going upstairs to table surf in the bathroom or bedrooms or keep the doors shut. You will find baby gates very helpful. Also you will find that keeping lots and lots of chew toys around will be very helpful to keep her attention off of things she shouldn't chew. We use Nylabones for powerful chewers and they love pigs ears and will take them a while to chew them. Kongs are great as well because they can chew them and not destroy them as they tend to do to other softer plastic toys. I have also found he loves tennis balls and won't destroy them as well. He is fully crate trained but will sleep in the bed with me when my BF is not here. They are very playful as well. Females do tend to try to be more dominant but being a dominant person can offset that problem. Here are some pics of my Taz and you can see they look very much alike. Taz's tail is curled but not nearly as much as a full Basenji. His ears also tip more like a terrier as well. He sheds very little though when I brought him home he was shedding very bad and I don't know if it was stress related to him being at the shelter or if it was just his diet. I feed him purina pro plan sensitve stomach and skin formula which consist of salmon, brewers rice and oatmeal which are very healty for them and keeps their fur shiney and their skin healthy as well as their stomachs. You will find though the longer you have her you will fall in love with Basenjis. I hope you enjoy her and have lots of fun. Make sure your new puppy and the parents have been health tested especially for Fanconi Syndrome. One of the health issues with Basenjis is low thyroid and it can cause a dog to be aggressive. The parents should be tested for that and also eye problems with a CERF exam and the DNA test for Fanconi. Basenjis need to be socialized. Jennifer

Pat, you're absolutely right about Sally. As in the USA I think that most responsible breeders here have contracts which can include endorsements. When we talk about endorsements here we usually mean those placed on the puppies at initial Kennel club registration. These typically are 'Not to be bred From'. these endorsements can be removed at any time later in the dog's life. I don't know if you have that system there? Archaft, I can't see any reason to object to a puppy having it's papers endorsed. Its usually a sign of responsible breeders after all. Its no reflection on the prospective purchaser. I reiterate all that Kipawa has advised too. I would always advise prospective first time Basenji purchasers to visit Basenjis in their own homes where you can. Derbyshire is not all that far away from me and I welcome you to visit at any time to see Basenjis at home. I no longer breed so have no agenda only to ensure that people know what to expect from typical Basenjis.

Thank you for the welcome. @Patty: Welcome to the forum. Is Chumley chihuahua sized? He's sort of in-between sized. He's gained a few pounds since I got him, he needed some weight on. He's now 12 pounds, 11 1/2 inches tall at the shoulder. I put pics up in the Show Off Your Dog forum http://www.basenjiforums.com/showthread.php?12666-My-Chumley-Basenji-chi-mix

Welcome, and so glad to see you respect a dog enough to do some research before getting one. I LOVE that attitude! Stick around - there is tons of great info here and everyone cares about the breed SO much! :)
