The other kind of guarding - for things that he gets by accident - that still continues, but less and less, although I don't trust him fully. He has been trained to go in his crate very willingly because he always gets a treat when he does. If he has something I don't want him to have I tell him to "get in your crate!" which almost always works the first time. He gets his treat, I close the crate, and then I clean up the mess without any worry.

For our dog, if it's something like a cookie or pizza, nothing will stop him from devoring it.

My boys would simply laugh at me if I thought that they could possibly keep them from a bitch in season!!

One boy we had (thankfully not in my own house) was a total escape artist and I'd put him in a vari-kennel inside of a wire crate that was clped all around it closed!

I found putting the boys in the escape-proof dog run outdoors works peachy…. girls can be indoors in crates... this will be the first year in a while I will have had to deal with bitches in season that actually live in my house... so it shall be fun I am sure 🙂

I have grabbed her when she tried to keep me from shuting the bathroom door on her, she was growling real loud, she knew I meant business and has not tried that behavior lately. I did carry a water bottle with me when I got into my car recently and told her, "No", and she has not done the growl & grab Mom's wrist since. Yea, the next time company stops by I will put her on a leash when they leave, which is a problem sometimes as she runs from me. Have to get the special sandwich meat treat out for that. haha!!!!! Can't keep her from the mailman and UPS man, I don't know when they come until it's too late. She is doing better about minding my "Leave It" commands, so I think in time of reinforcing no growling she will get better. Thanks all for the advice!:D

One thing you might try that others have found successful is to get the exercise pens for a corner of the room (near windows maybe). Then the dog has room to move around and it won't seem so confining.
When I got EL D he was adamant about never going near the crate (the previous owner had serious problems with him and he tore up two crates). So I simply confined him to the dining room (closed doors and put up barricades) and made sure there wasn't anything that he could destroy that I cherished. I also made sure he had tons of toys and gave him a treat filled kongs to help fill the time. It didn't take long before EL D soon had the run of the house and I've never had any problems since with him being destructive.

Hmm, didn't realize that she was just spayed, could be end result of surgery and healing… and in that case just a fluke...

But keep and eye on it.. as sometimes when they are spay/neutered if the surgery is not done perfectly they have problems with peeing... and they are not able to control it on their own... for myself I have never had that problem with any of mine after spay/neutered, but I know of people that have.

When I nap, I almost always wake up to Sophie licking the pillow beside my head. :rolleyes: Goofy dog!

Yes, in winter they have their humans trained to entertain them - OR ELSE!!

We also hide squeaky toys under a blanket or fill toys with treats and bury it in their toy basket.

Also one game one dog loves the other hates!

I've tried the treats all diffent types and the kongs they hate kongs go figure my luck huh lol I can't separate them because i tried that once and upstairs said it only made it worse instead of constant barking it was barking with constant loud whining on top of that I think i'm going to start off trying that "rescue remedy" and see how that works first. then if need be i will go to the vet and see what kind of meds they suggest Is the rescue remedy a plug in thing or is it a pill i give to the dog ?? Is there diffent types out there of it ?? Thanks for all the suggestions 🙂

Rescue Remedy is a liquid… but it is 27% alcohol... whcih is most likey why it works for some dogs. Honestly, I have never had any luck with it....

My first basenji used to bite his nails all the time. He especially liked doing it around 2 in the morning.:eek:

Yes that is similar. When EL D nipped my brother it was never really hard (okay so he'll have a bruise) and he backed off pretty quick once he let my brother have it. But it is unnerving because it is unpredictable.

EL D occasionally gets restless if he knows (however he knows) there are wild animals outside. Although I live in a metro area, we get racoons, skunks, and lots of rabbits at night. And when he has hunted/caught rabbits in the evening he is restless all evening long - keeps wanting to go out and check for more. But that only lasts for a day or so.

An old school technique my grenpeppy taught me way back when is to wait for your dog to mouth your hand and then grab his lower jaw. If you use your thumb to apply a light pressure on his tounge he soon learns that biting people's hand is a very unpleasant thing. to speed it up try putting bitter apple spray on your hands

That is an old school technique, and I never found it to work much.. and you have to be really quick to catch them each and every time…

Class will help to give you an opportunity in a controlled environment to practice the good behaviors you want Charlie to develop when he is out in public. He can learn that there are times when we get to meet and greet and there are times when we work.
