No, I don't know that one but these are beautifully hand carved collars made specifically for Basenjis. They're custom made in very limited quantities. Worth a look… http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=271110778466

The thundershirt does work! My B would be completely nuts in his crate when we would leave him at home. Even after all the crate training we tried, even trying to leave him in the bathroom with a gate at the door. No matter what he would freak out and even hurt himself a couple of times! I got him the thundershirt and got him used to wearing it when he was at home so he wouldn't associate it to his crate. It worked wonders! I can now put him in his crate without it and he is calmer (I say this because he will cry for a little while when I leave). Good luck with your Basenji girl!! :D

Wonderful video but frustrating to watch as You Tube always keeps stopping and starting on my computer.

I can see where the Flexi would not be ideal for both dog or person in certain circumstances. I've seem many instances where users just can't figure them out, or are not good at using them and that is hazardous to all involved! However, I live in the country and find that the long 27' Flexi is a good way for her to burn energy on our walks where there are no people or cars around. If my dog sees a squirrel, deer, groundhog, etc. and dashes towards it as most Basenji's do, I anticipate it getting to the end of the lead and already have my arm in a back position and cushion the dog when it gets to the end by letting my arm go forward in a "shock absorber" fashion. Also, my dog has learned how long the lead is and will usually slow itself down when it knows the end of is near. IMHO, I see no harm in it if used properly and in the right areas and circumstances although one has to be very aware of what is going on around them. For where I live in the country, I don't see much sense in having my dog walk perfectly beside me. Basenji's like to run and sniff things out so I let them. It is her time to enjoy. Just my opinion.

Deb, that sounds like a great class, did you take it locally? I would be interested in taking that class!

There is LC in Columbia Ky the weekend of 17 Nov. there will be practices on the Sat around 3 pm. The next closer would be the Indianapolis area the weekend before that. Most Of us drive 6-12 hours for any lC events in the Midwest

We had an older rescue who was used to getting up early between 5 to 6 a.m. We had to take her out and none of the other dogs would go out with her as they were still in bed under the covers. It was like she had an internal alarm clock. It did not matter what time we went to bed or what time she had been out the night before. Jennifer

Hi Joti and Karen, We live in Ladner, but we have done lure course practicing with Kipawa in the Cloverdale area. The people who host the lure course practicing have whippets. They have a large acreage and often set up two styles of courses - one straight and one 'freeform' (not sure if that is the right word for it). Can you email me at compucat@dccnet.com and I will give you more information. They are holding a practice tomorrow, August 12 that begins at 10 a.m.

@congosworld: Once Congo is exploring a new place or tired of doing what we ask, food is not a reward. We've used everything from bacon to steak to dog treats to kibble. Even if he happens to come when we call, he'll ignore the food and look at us with disdain. :p His primary motivation is movement. One of the things I have noticed by reading this forum is that many people don't know how to do positive or "reward based" training very well. You are trying to condition the response, not feed the dog. Failure to move to an intermittent reward system can result in failure of the training to "stick". What keeps people at slot machines? Wondering if the next time will be the "payoff"! Works with dogs, too! And it isn't just about how salient the food is, although that helps with early training. Anything can become boring or "less desirable" than freedom as it becomes commonplace. There is more value in something that is rarely available, so if you want really yummy treats to have an impact, use them sparingly. (I believe this is the foundation for the "really reliable recall") I would add, don't "wear out" the dog by picking at him all the time. If you are at a social gathering, it might make sense to give him a short run, then confine him while you socialize rather than letting him wander around and constantly having to call him back. Then when you have time to give him your undivided attention, give him another opportunity to enjoy his freedom, possibly as a reward for obeying a few commands before you release him. The worst thing you can do is allow him to think that obedience is "optional". It is just too easy to teach a dog he doesn't have to be bothered when he doesn't want to, even if that isn't your intent.

@ohbassit: So the Vet gave her the seal of approval. She did say that everything seems to be in order and her hips are fine. I definately think that it was a case of her being bored. We have switched things up and she knows now that once she does her business a few times the rest of the walk is for her. I try and keep the walk limited at 45 minutes to an hour since if I gave her free reign to sniff and say hello to everybody (people, dogs, cats, squirrels) we would be out there for awhile. While your Vet might have given her "HIPS" the seal of approval… unless they are x-rayed and viewed by a board certified Othopedic vet.. you really would not know if there is a problem with hips....

That sounds like so much fun! Oakley is now 16 months and starting to test the waters more when hiking…you can blatantly tell its because he's more confident..but I must say he's more reliable than I thought he would ever be. So eeefarm has good advice, they certainly get bolder! Although it'd be hard for a basenji to not want to follow a horse, at least for oak it would be- always wants to be with the his mom and gravitates to horses and cows ( I'm guessing it's the poop!) Pics of your horse/B. adventures out??

@eeeefarm: Been there, done that! It gets tiresome after awhile. I even wrote a Haiku about it: Stupid f**king dog has not peed this morning yet and I want breakfast! Gotta love 'em - LOL. I can remember thinking your haiku quite often when Shaye was little. Once she learned it though, it was solid, no forgetting.
