Basenji Silhouette'

One of my favorite photos of my basenji Kembe. She loves to sit on her heated pad @ the picture window. This photo happen to be taken on FLAG DAY! How appropriate with the basenji silhouette!

A Basenji question made it on a Jeopardy tonight -

Basenjis want to be near “their people”. We become part of their pack. My basenji watches everything I do and wants to be “part of the family”. She knows EVERYTHING that goes on in this house. You might want to reconsider getting a basenji unless you are able to fully accommodate the dog. My basenji does have access to a doggie door - but I would NEVER leave her outside alone 6-7 hours even w/ the accommodations you mention. Having a basenji is like having a 3 year old CHILD - it’s a LIFETIME COMMITMENT! And it’s our responsibility to give the Basenji the BEST possible life it deserves. The basenjis will give back to you more than you’ll ever given them.

Our basenji slept in our bed for the past 14 and a half years. I never in a million years would have thought my husband would have ever allowed it - but he is also crazy about our dog. About 9 months ago I had to put a doggie bed in our bedroom for her to sleep - with her age I was too afraid she might jump off or accidentally fall off and get hurt. To think years ago she use to jump on and off that bed with ease - then a few years ago I had to pick her up and put her on the bed and now I’m fearful that she’ll fall off or hurt herself - it has been a journey. It’s sad that it has come to this - but she’s still happy and definitely wants to be in our bedroom to sleep. Basenji want to be with their pack.

I say "no" - these dogs require so much attention and thrive on social contact. You need to be there to constantly reinforce positive behavior and let them know you are there to take care of them.

Today is Kembe’s 14th Birthday!
We baked her a Doggy 🧁 cupcake with hamburger, oats, eggs, chopped broccoli and carrots - with whipped cream cheese “frosting”! She gobbled it down!️

She is ADORABLE - a real cutie! As @eeeefarm stated some more information might give some more clues. There was recently a post “Marvin...Basenji”? - many of us thought he was definitely part basenji - when the DNA results came back - 0% basenji. So you never know!

Eating time is NOT negotiable with my B. She has her breakfast between 5:30-6am and dinner between 4-4:30pm. She has this inner biological clock and “dances” and gets very excited when it’s meal time. When DAY LIGHTS SAVINGS TIME occurs I have to stagger the eating time by 30 minutes and it takes about 2 weeks until her new time clock sets in. Lol

Basenjis have the Keys to our HEARTS! ️ ️

Binti is so photogenic! Always enjoyed the Binti photos! So adorable! I’ve always favored the red/white basenjis and I’ve liked the brindles because my brother had a brindle but after seeing Binti and also the tris - I have to say I like all the BASENJIS! I now don’t have a preference! They’re all so SPECIAL!

Hello - I’d like to thank everyone who responded and commented about the Vestibular Canine Syndrome and their experiences. To update you - I brought Kembe to the Vet yesterday morning but due to restrictions with the Corvid-19, I could not go in with her. The vet gave her an acupuncture treatment and prescribed a Chinese Herbal medication called External Wind. I immediately noticed that Kembe’s body was not as rigid and stiff - she seemed much more calm and relaxed. We came home and she slept for about 4 hours -and was able to do her “basenji sleeping curl”. When she woke up I could see that her eyes were much more focused - and her face didn’t look disoriented and confused. She was able to stand although still a little wobbly but she didn’t fall over and was not stiffly leaning her entire body to the left. She seems to be slowly improving each day so I am now hopeful she will make a full recovery. The doctor said it could take a few weeks but he was confident that she would recover because the prognosis for this disorder is good. The comments on this forum not only provided me with information from owners previous experiences with Vestibular Syndrome but also gave me reassurance and hope. Thanks again for your helpful comments.

You are absolutely right! I can READ my Basenji and know exactly what she's thinking but she can also read me. I think back 12 1/2 years ago when I first got her - in the first two weeks she was able to take off on me where I was chasing her around the neighborhood - it has NEVER HAPPEN SINCE - as I had to become SMARTER than her. It definately takes a different kind of mind-set when dealing w/ a Basenji. I did take my basenji to doggie school which I feel was extremely beneficial- it trained ME how to deal w/ her- lol. Keeping them active is so important - I walk my dog three times a day for a total of 3-5 miles per day. This keeps her stimulated, active, and out in the fresh air. I would hate anyone not to experience the love and satisfaction of having a Basenji but I think they must understand the work and commitment of owning such a a regal breed. It's not fair to the dog unless you're willing to give 110%!

Harold - I got a good chuckle on your Basenji post. I could relate to a lot of your comments. Your baby is lucky to have you as a Basenji parent! I'd love to see a photo of him!
