  • Welcome to the forum Ashley! Can't wait to see pics of your little tri guy!!

  • Thanks for all the replies!! I am twenty years old, a college student, and live in Columbus, Ohio. I just lost my dog Riley about a month ago. She was a Chiarat. Something bad in my life happened, and I had to move. I live with my Mom now, and she is very allergic to everything, and sadly she was allergic to Riley. :( I had to give her up at the local Humane Scociety, but don't think bad of me on that. Two weeks later she was adopted by a wonderful family, and the lady that did the filing for Riley gave me her cell phone number to contact her at anytime, and kept me updated. It was really hard. But I am so happy that she found a loving home. I decided to get a basenji, because of well of course my mom, and I've done a lot of research, and I believe that this breed will suit me well. But now the good news. :) My pup (haven't decided his name yet) is about three weeks old and is in Caldwell, Texas. He has a couple brothers and sisters, and lives on a 600 acre farm for now. I am flying to Texas with my mom to pick him up the first week of February. I don't believe in having my pup shipped to me. That's just my opinion. Here is a pic of him, his momma, and poppa. The breeder that I found has been amazing. Every question I have asked she has responded right away.

    my pup.

momma named Dandee with her old litter

    poppa named Poker.

  • Hello & welcome to the forum. Please post more pics. Coingrats on your new pup.

You do know that B's aren't hypoallergenic..?
The pup sure looks cute! :)

  • I was told that they are great for people who are allergic to dogs. A Vet even told me that. lol, and thanks! The breeder is going to send me more pics today!!

I hope it works out for you.. I know a lot of allergic people.. and they ALL react to my B.. And he has a very, very short coat and (almost) doesn't shed..

And Vets shouldn't say such stupid things.. (I'm studying to become one ;))

  • Haha me too! This is my first year. I hope so too. I couldn't take that again :(. My mom had a teacup poodle, and she has to reaction to him, hopefully my pup will get the same reaction!

Yes, I hope so too.. It wouldn't be fair for the pup to be brought to a shelter..
Can't you visit a breeder near by with your mom so you can see if she has a reaction or not?

  • Yes we are going to. The breeder that I have contacted said anytime is fine with her, and it wouldn't be fair to him at all… I will never do that again. Trust me.

Good to hear you are being a responsible buyer. :)
Now you are going to get all these questions about the parents of your pup being Fanconi tested etc. ;)
I hope for sure they are!

  • I did ask her, and she said recently she has just tested the parents with the strips, because when she tried to they were no longer taking new testies, but she promised me as soon as she does I will be notified. Also if I have to I will get him tested. He also has a health gaurantee too. I also asked her about the parents health, and what not. He also has his dewclaws removed.

  • Is this the breeder that has 3 litters? If so, these pups are not AKC (American Kennel Club) registered. And I would wonder if they have been DNA tested for Fanconi? You can read about DNA testing for Fanconi at www.basenji.org

  • She has two litters. He is ACA and CKC registered. I have also read up everthing about the disease. He also I believe can be AKC registered. I have talked with her for awhile now, and I am confident in her…

Good to hear that you have researched Basenji health concerns and done your homework to verify that DNA testing has been done… As others here can tell you, Fanconi is a horrible affliction and with the DNA test there never has to be another born with the potential to get Fanconi. There are now over 2300 Basenjis tested world wide and listed on the public database, a credit to breeders to the future of our breed.

  • Yeah I thank you guys so much for everything you have done.

  • Tanza just wondering what is the name of the breeder that is having three litters?

Delighted that Kane is finally on the mend - you will see his weight gain in leaps and bounds now he no longer has those unwelcome little visitors. Keep a close eye on him though and get back to the vet at the first sign of any more troubles. good luck to you both !

Everyone meet Klassic's Trixie!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We drove the 3.5 hours from Pittsburgh to pick up Trixie from Sue (Klassic Basenji's in Marion, OH). It was a very long day with 7 hours of driving to and from, but the ride home was much better than the ride there, except for the part where Trixie peed on my friend that went with me to pick her up! Trixie seems to be adjusting well so far, we are about 50/50 with going potty outside. Trying to learn her body language as to when she needs to go out! She is a stubborn thing on the leash and that will need much work as well! So happy to have her here! She loves our kitty Pinkie, and our miniature pinscher, Zombie. Zombie is more interested in stealing the puppies belonging's and claiming them for her own. He's a hungry dog today. Gave him 1/2 cup in the morning and just a few minutes ago. He had no problem eating. I'm much more happy that he's eating now. He likes his bone as well. Not too much into the Kong yet. I just wish he didn't cry in his crate when I put him in there. Feel bad for him but I know it just takes adjusting. He is perfectly fine when I return home after he's been in there awhile. It's just the initial time. To be honest though, this transition went far better than I expected. I was prepared for the worst. This little guy has done very well.
