Many questions

  • Looks like some corgi in her to me… Seems like she may have a slightly elongated body in porportion to her height. But it's hard to tell from the pic.

  • So cute! Looking forward to more pictures!

  • Whatever she is, she's sure cute!!! Definately part Basenji… and maybe the Chi.

  • I have been thinking that she is Chihuahua and jack russell, but the tail is what does not match up.

  • Well, she could be Rat terrier, and chihuaha…or basenji and chi. Decker Rat terriers have Basenji in the mix, so there definite looks like there is Basenji in there by virtue of the tail.

    I would say a Rat Terrier also…

  • @kriscavy72:

However she does have a protective bark. But that is the only behavior difference from everything I have read.

Keoki is a 9 mos old, purebred Basenji and he has started barking. We are currently visiting at my mother's house, and the dogs are spending most of their time in the garage {w/a nice woodstove!}. Keoki has begun barking – several short repeated barks in rapid successsion; does not resemble any sound other than a bark -- at anyone who approaches the garage door, AND at the cows that he can see on the hillside outside the garage. This is a new thing for him, and I can only attribute it to the new environment and his uncertainty about it.

    {He's been barking tonight at the window and garage door, which is unnerving because it is pitch black outside, and we know that bears and cougars frequent Mom's yard at night [poop is everywhere out there] and I have to take the dogs out in that darkness to potty a few times every night. :eek: Scares the heeby-geebies out of me!!}

Although Basenjis do not typically bark, they are certainly capable.

  • Exactly… which is why I tell people "they choose not to bark", but they can... Jamari barked all the time, granted it was more of a "boof" and usually only 2 or 3 at a time.... but they are barks...

  • Ruby (another pure-bred) has barked a few times since I got her. The first time happened when my brother entered the house late at night when it was dark and it surprised her.

The other times have happened when I feed her dinner. Before I put her food down, I say "tell me" and she either yodels or barks. I think the bark happens when she can't quite get out the yodel :D . Either way, she gets a reward and lots of praise for using her voice. :D

  • For some reason the original pic will not show for me now so I can't look at it again but the pic with her head in the cone is not a Basenji head.

Chi x Basenji or Chi x Rat Terrier or maybe even a full Rat Terrier would be my guess too. She's definately a real cutie pie in any case. :D

  • @Quercus:

She looks like a Basenji, Chi cross to me. I dunno, though…the body look totally Basenjis, except for maybe a little stubby...but something about the ears, and the eyes looks more Chihuahua, or terrier to me.

Whatever she is, she is awfully cute!

I was was thinking the same thing–basenji/chihuahua. A real cutie pie.

  • She looks a lot like a basenji/chihauhau mix I recently saw. But you can definately see the basenji.

I have to agree that a Basenji as a first dog is going to be "challenging". They are happiest when they are with you, and they can be destructive when they aren't happy. Being alone 10 hours/day would be an undesirable lifestyle for this breed. I outlined an exercise for you. Think about your answers to the questions. It will help you decide if you are ready for a dog. It's okay if you aren't ready "right now". You can get a dog in a few years, or when your schedule is better suited for it. The point is for you to form a conclusion on whether you are ready now, or not. Imagine your typical day with your dog: Waking up to a (daily) 3 mile run with adequate time for toileting. Feeding your dog, providing a bit of one-on-one, and then heading off to work/classes. Return home, walk your dog, play wtih them a bit, and take them to your sports activities with you. Either setting up a safe place outside so your dog can watch, or allowing them to engage with you (depending on the sport). Returning home, toileting, some one-on-one exercise (walk, run, training, play, etc.), hanging out together while you (do homework, play video games, text friends, eat dinner, do laundry, etc.), some one-on-one time, and sleeping. Is this something you can do - every day - no matter what? Is your heart set on a puppy? (Puppies need a different schedule.) Would you would consider adopting an adult dog instead? What is it about a Basenji that made you pick this dog breed? What about the time for a job so you can afford a dog (food, treats, shots, medical care, etc.)? The answers are for you, not for me. Just be honest with yourself. I'm an adult and I waited five (5) years before I brought home my Basenji.

If this is the case, then I would guess it is from a Back Yard Breeder....

Welcome and congrats on your new addition! I'm no expert, but I would re-think neutering early. I would wait until the growth plates fully close and then neuter him. And I would not say that the breed is susceptible to attacking, though Basenjis can be reserved and cautious with strangers. Most are confident, loving dogs, when socialized. It's always good to keep an eye out for problems, however, and address any aggressive behaviors before they have a chance to escalate. Good luck with him!

Another thing I've done with mine, I use the patio door to get to the garage when we go for rides and the side door of the house when we go for walks (the front door is never used for anything). That way my dogs always head in a certain direction when "escaping" out a particular door. Although a trainer told me not to that (she insisted dogs need to be kept guessing), it has so far worked for me. Even when the two escapes happened, it was in the particular direction for that door.
