Basenji Talk

  • Congrats!!!
And you are especially brave adding 2 girls  .

  • Congratulations!!!! We just added our third a few weeks ago and it is a little crazier in our house than we had expected! BUT,,,,,,,it is well worth it when all three are snuggled up to us in bed!!

  • @Basenji_Boy:

Do the two females get along?

They've been together forever and could only be adopted as a pair so I would say yes…..I guess I'll find out if they have any issues with each other once there here. They've been crated together while waiting to be adopted so I got them one big crate to share hopefully that works and keeps their stress down.

  • Alrighy huge congrats!!!

  • I would love to see a photo of all 3 of your b's…once they all get settled.
Thanks for taking these 2 into your home.
    Rescue needs folks like you.
    Hugs

  • Wow! That's great! Congrats…and looking forward to the pictures!

That's great! I wish you so much luck and thank You for taking them into your home!

  • The girls are to fly out Tomorrow…They should be in DC by tomorrow evening.
I'm hoping to get them this weekend...its so hard to contain my excitement !!

Please hope for good weather, a smooth flight and as little stress as possible for our two new babies.

  • fingers crossed, and good wishes on the way for a smooth transition :)

  • Goodluck and fingers crossed for you!!!!! Goodluck and fingers crossed for you!!!!! Goodluck and fingers crossed for you!!!!! – thought I better times everything by three -- ha ha

  • Well the girls are here. There is some snarking. The couch seems to be the biggest issue this evening. We did all manage to find a comfy spot and snuggle for a while. I think they'll all be ok with a little time and lots of love. They all want love and pets at the same time. I'll post pictures soon !!!:)

  • Woo Hoo good to hear they made it! Please keep us updated that the adjustment goes smoothly.

    And don't forget the pictures

  • Congratulations!!! That is so great that you adopted two–and older!!!! It is definitely harder to place two together. My Tyler and Zoey were at the SoCal basenji rescue for almost two years before I came along. You may find that issues come up between the two now that they are in a new home. I had issues after a couple of months, but everything settled out, and they are doing just great.

  • EXCELLENT news!!!! Congratulations! Keep us updated!

  • Yay! kepp us posted on how they progress…and post pictures when you can!

  • Well,,,,,???????? How are things going? We just added a third BRAT dog so I feel like I can relate to your situation and I am curious as to how your new babies are doing.

  • They actually played today !!!! Our biggest problems are between Deke and Gracie. Today they got a toy that they fought over before(we took it away just gave it back today) And tossed it back and forth. Then jumped and lunged and NO growling. It was sooooo cute. Now, later they were back to the snarking thing but little steps!!!

Gracie and Britty sleep in bed with us completely under the covers.
Deke loves his crate so I haven't changed that he sleeps there.

It's also made Deke a lot more vocal baroooing and moaning and everything in between.

Honestly I don't think I'd every get anything but a Rescue again(no offense to the breeders) I just love the whole thing..and it makes you feel good to give these guys a home. Gracie is always making sure we are still here and asking for love. Deke ask for love a lot also. Britty loves to snuggle but not as often.

How are yours doing? You a few weeks ahead of us.

  • Im glad to hear that yours are doing well. Sounds like they are still getting to know each other (Im sure Deke is thinking ,,,,,,hmmmphhh,,,,,what in the world has mommy brought into our house!,,,,,lol) Ours havent had a snarking fit for a while,,,,,,,they were mainly over the bed,,,,,,,Bella our BRAT dear felt like she didnt want Wrigley(our newest BRAT–his name was Lee on the BRAT website) up on the bed with her sometimes but now when Wrigley gets in bed we just hold her close to us until he settles in. Wrigley is still adjusting,,,,,,,he was found on a busy highway near St. Louis-- we went to Missouri to get him a few weeks ago-- so we really dont know how long he was alone --makes me soooooooo sad to think of him scared and alone. He has anxiety issues and was until the past few days very difficult to get into the house. He would just stand in the doorway from the outside to inside and look at us with those big brown eyes like "I really want to come in but Im sooooo scared". Anyway, he seems to be doing better and they seem to be buddies about 99% of the time. BTW, I saw that you are in PA,,,,,,,,,we are in southeastern Ohio,,,,have you had rain the past few days? Never knew rain could make my life so difficult until we got the b's. Also, Im with you on the BRAT only from now on. Even though they can be challenging they are definately worth it. My hubby made fun of me the fi rst time Bella jumped up on my lap and cuddled,,,,,I got a little choked up because I knew that she finally felt like I was her "mommy". One last thing, have you decided to stop looking at the BRAT website,,,,,I have been banned by DH,,,,,,I think it is a good idea because it wouldnt take much for me to find furbaby #4!!!! :)

  • Hmmm…. ever heard the idea that "equal" numbers are best?????

  • ohhhhhhhhhhh,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,now ya tell me !!!!!!!!!!!! lol

Okay, that is interesting. An 'aloof' owner and 2 outgoing dogs - go figure.

Nemo's on to something. A good B&W could pull that off without an accomplice though.

I would have to agree with the others. Surgery is pretty tricky especially if the dog is on meds. Some medication is mood altering. If you could possibly wait at least a week to bring in the new dog that would be ideal. Males usually recover pretty quickly and are back to normal within a week. This will give your pooch some much needed rest & healing time. To introduce the dog I would have them meet in neutral territory some sniffing & such & afterwards I would take a nice long long long walk around your neighborhood…like 2hours at least. Let them get used to being together with you on your walks. I would even make it a routine for a while until they get used to the pack order. I would also suggest RULES from Day #1. Establish the rules of the house so both dogs understand that you're the boss & these are the rules...My rules I don't allow the dogs to hoover while I make their meals. They have to be sitting calmly until I'm done. They eat in separate crates & before I put their dish down they must sit & give me eye contact. I do the same for treats and toys...everything is given only if they sit calmly & give eye contact. There's no jumping on me EVER...if they do this they get my back which they hate because they love mom's attention :) Good luck to you :)

My boy Cody loves bread. He has eaten most of a loaf of white bread while I was at work. He was fine, but the vet recomended setting out extra water, because he would be thirsty. He was able to digest it with no ill effects. I now have to have the bread up on top of a very tall cabinet about 5 feet off the floor.

at the dog park occasionally you will see a dog fight in the larger breeds, they typically play rougher…..more chomping action vs. basenji boxing.... the typical dog park protocol is pulling them apart, or the safe route is the bucket of water....total distraction! can you imagine doing that with basenjis.....screams like little girls!! LOL
