Kembe always slept in our bed up until these last 2 years of her life. She was a bed and blanket hog - legs stretched out and took over the bed. I put her doggie bed in our room right next to our bed in her latter years - I was afraid of her falling or jumping off the bed and getting hurt.
For those that sleep in the bed

Where in the bed do they sleep?
Tiggy likes to sleep either between mine and my husbands pillows or lately he's taken to sleeping between my legs. But his favorite place is anywhere that he snuggle with me and Reggie at the same time
-
Dash sleeps under the covers. where under the covers varies but that part never changes. Sissy starts under the covers and then she comes out and just sleeps in between us for the rest of the night.
-
Magnum is under and on top of the covers a few times each night. While under the covers he switches who he uses as his back prop. When he's on top of the covers, he usually uses my legs as his back prop.
He's always between my husband and me and always has to lay against something. And the plopping involved! Good gracious!
-
I forgot to add the Tig usually stays in the same spot unless I move him, he sleeps like a limp noodle and can be moved around. He has just figured out that under the covers is warmer, we don't have heat on in our bedroom. So we all snuggle under the down blankets. Oh the no heat is by choice. I grew up in the pacific northwest in "god's country" where it'll snow on 4th of july, and used to sleep with windows open in the middle of winter. But now because of DH coming from Oklahoma where it's pretty warm there even in winter, we just don't turn on the heaters in the room and the rest of the house evens it out.

My boy Cody is under the top cover down by our toes.
Shasta is up with her head on the second pillow, right next to me.
They sure do keep a body warm! -
Good Grief is all I can say.
Chance first starts off under the covers leaning up against my hip. After about an hour he moves to the top of the covers because it gets too hot. While on the top of the covers he sleeps sideways pushing Alex and I to the edge of the bed. A few hours later he moves back under the covers again…this time putting his butt by my face. I then move him and the stiffens up and pushes us further off the bed.
This is how it is EVERY NIGHT.
Argh! -
It's much more interesting with four snuggled in with ya, challenging too!:D ….well actually there's five.
The two girls, Raven and Penny are right up against me, one under the covers at my feet and the other under the covers up close to my chest.
They love their Daddy.:DJasper(lone wolf)almost never sleeps under the covers, he sleeps at the foot of the bed on top of the blankets. Sometimes he will move in between us, but he just doesn't like it under the blankets.....there's something wrong with him, I thought all Basenji's love covers!
Willy sleeps by my wife, he's a Mommy's boy. He is one of the in and out types. He get's hot and out he comes, get's cold and he's clawing you to let him back in........looney!
Oh and then there's the terrier mix, the old girl sleeps in between us up close to the pillows.....she has seniority!;) -

My EL D likes to sleep under covers up against my back. Sometimes he gets a little hot (now that I have extra covers on) and he'll crawl out more but eventually he head-butts me to let him back under the covers. Occasionally he'll stretch out (and once rolled off the bed!) but usually he sleeps curled-up.
My previous beastie insisted on sleeping between my legs (that got tough quickly) and then he'd push and shove all night.

They all seem to take what space is left and really don't intrude on us, besides they are like little heaters in the winter. They curl up in little balls when it's cold. It's the stretching out when it's warm that can make things a little tight.
I've been called skinny most of my life so I don't take up that much space myself.;) -
Sahara sleeps wherever she wants, afterall, her name is Africian Queen Sahara. Always near us, on top, under, wherever she wants. PERIOD!

Try it with a boxer and a basenji, lol, we have a king size too, but we all fit plus the cat. We figured out that Reggie has to be either on my side edge or in the middle, if he's not then he pushes Dave towards me then I end up dangling on the edge
-
We bought a Cal King for more room and we only have 2 basenjis! Talker usually stays on the couch and comes in bed early morning. That happens during the warm seasons. Now that winter is here, he's been coming to bed early and wants to sleep right next to me. He use to sleep at the end of the bed but now he's next to me.
Savannah always sleeps in between my husband and I. She calls that the No. 1 position. -
Lucy will sleep next to me or at the foot of the bed. My husky has to sleep right next to me or on top of my legs. But Bart stays curled up, Lucy will stretch out and shove us off the bed, or toss herself off on accident. I have a Queen sized bed, with 2 bigger people, a Basenji and a Husky/Greyhound. I need more room.

The nightly ritual (after our walk):
- Mom and Dad get into bed and She-Ra sits at the foot gnawing on her chew/bone/toy for a while.
- Baths for Daddy and occasionally Mommy. Mainly Daddy…I must have a high salt content on my skin or something.
- After a good forehead licking, it's time to figure out where to sleep. Usually it's with Mommy but occasionally she'll curl up with me...almost always somewhere in the middle of the bed.
- The good part...when she's down, SHE'S DOWN. She doesn't move the entire night until I get up to feed the cats (and her).
-
Nala is usually in bed with the first person to hit the sheets. Under the covers in between their legs or in the "crook" behind bent knees. She'll get up occasionally (to lure visiting Bs out of bed…?..hee hee) or to get a drink and then jump up or scratch the bed to get us (usually DH) to let her under the covers. She usually does, as my kids call it..."spin, spin, spin, spin....plop!"
In the a.m., if my parents are visiting and sleep "in", she will abandon the empty bed and go bother them to let her under their covers! Ah...a dog's life!! -
what % of basenjis always want to sleep in the bed? and how does that work play out on nights when their owners want to be "romantic". will they flip out because you locked them out the room and try to ruin the moment. that might sound like a joke but im dead serious haha. im trying to get full understanding of what im getting in to if i get one. Just by reading all these stories it make me think they are smart enough to try ruining the moment

Great question:D Timing is everything!;) Ah, the beauty of crate training!
I guess you put them in their crates or they get to ruin your moment.:D

uh…100% of our basenjis ALWAYS want to sleep in the bed...but unfortunately for them, only 33% - 50% of them do on any given night
You can definitely train them to sleep in the crate occasionally or always...most basenjis do fine with crate training at night. Or you can just work around them when you are feeling romantic...though, IME, you really can't work around more than two or you can shove them off the bed...or you could be romantic in the bathtub (basenjis won't follow you there!)
I suppose it might be different if it was a dating situation, rather than a married situation. Might be hard to impress a possible mate with dogs lounging around on the bed, and turning into little statues impossible to be moved.
Basenjis aren't so impossible to live with that you have to change your whole life...YOU just have to decide what works for you..and then find a way for the dogs to be happy too. Most of us find it is easier to change our habits, than to change the habits of the dogs...but if you are dedicated and energetic you CAN train these dogs
